Athenian aims to cultivate a creative, inclusive space for marginalized voices, to provide tools and resources for women and femme-identified writers, and to transform the world of publishing by disrupting oppressive constructs of femininity, sexuality, and race.
Vision & Goals
We envision an anti-racist, feminist, creative organization that . . .
- adopts language as a vehicle for social change;
- employs writing as a way to resist, express oneself, promote creativity, encourage collaboration, find healing, and award power;
- promotes marginalized voices and unrepresented writers in publishing, especially writers of color and queer/trans-feminine voices;
- creates a community in which we decide what being a woman means to us;
- uses inclusive language that values all femininities, gender identities, sexualities, races, (dis)abilities, and nationalities.
The Athenian Lounge will provide equipment, technology, resources, and comfort to femme and women writers. This private writers collective will house our creative workshops, professional development seminars, and career counseling sessions. Your sponsorship will allow us to (1) develop and maintain the Lounge and (2) host a variety of events lead by successful publishing professionals, who will share their knowledge with the next generation of writers, editors, etc.
Athenian will provide writing workshops for adult femme and women writers. We will offer workshops in all categories, such as poetry, screenwriting, journalism, fiction, creative nonfiction, genre-based fiction, short stories, and more. Your sponsorship will help us provide scholarships for those unable to afford workshops tickets.
We are dedicated to bringing diverse speakers, performers, and artists to the Athenian Stage, a feature of our Lounge. Your sponsorship will help us celebrate voices of other cultures and identities by funding their visit to our community and allowing them to connect with our patrons.
Athenian will visit both private and public schools to inspire children to use language as a way to express themselves and develop a creative conscious. School visits include a writing activity and take-home prompts that relate to the lesson. Your sponsorship will provide the funding to visit classrooms in underprivileged areas of the Southeast.
Our team will work with other nonprofit organizations to provide writing retreat opportunities for those in need, such as domestic violence victims or incarcerated women and femmes. Our outreach activities encourage self-expression, for both professional development and personal growth. Your sponsorship will allow us to provide quality creative counseling at no cost to these special patrons.
Publishing & Press
We vow to publish books and collections by authors whose works desperately need to be told—mainly, those living in diaspora, targeted for their race/gender/sexual orientation, or deemed as having a “strange” or “undeveloped” world. Our publications will celebrate womanhood and femmehood in all of its different forms. Your sponsorship will assist with production and equipment costs to create these works of art.
