A tale of murder, madness, and madams in the infamous red-light district of Storyville, New Orleans! A serial killer is murdering the prostitutes and a detective and doctor race to save future victims. Can they stop this new breed of killer in the vein of Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes (and what do they have to do with the crimes?)
Storyville:The Prostitute Murders is an original graphic novel of 140 (minimal) pages that is set in the Storyville district of 1910 New Orleans. . It was one of the key sites for the “Devil’s Blues” which became known as jazz. The legalized red light district ran for 25 years and virtually everything was permitted- from sex to booze, from gambling to drugs The only thing that was not acceptable was murder, because murder was bad for business. When prostitutes and their customers start being killed, Detective Brian Donahue, a transplant from Chicago, finds he has no answer to these seemingly random murders. Enlisting the aid of Dr. Eric Trevor, a psychiatrist at the nearby St. James Infirmary, the two of them embark to unravel the mystery of this new type of killer seldom seen before…a serial killer.
The Graphic Novel:
The Storyville graphic novel is an original graphic novel and is a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end. It will become readily apparent in reading also, that it is not one of the current "decompresion" books...we believe you should get a lot for your money. It will be about 140 pages, likely more. The PDF will contain the "story" only but the printed version will have some additional pages such as letters, notes, journal pages, etc. from the characters. Although not integral to the story, they will add to the depth of the characters and story. The entire book is all NEW, never before printed, except there is a short segment (a flashback scene) that is illustrated by Mark Bloodworth and this is the only "reprint" material.
A note from publisher of Caliber and creator of Storyville, Gary Reed.
"Welcome to the first kickstarter for me as well as Caliber Comics. I am really proud of this book and hope that it does well as there are many more stories to tell in this setting that I delved into. I will focus on doing complete stories in each graphic novel so that each can stand alone. When I first embarked on this tale, it was dealing more with the insane asylum and in fact, was called St. James' Infirmary but as the story grew, I realized that it was Storyville that was, well, was the story. But St. James plays a critical role, not only in this book but future ones. I hope you will join me on this first of hopefully many tales of 'Madames and Madness'. Oh, and please excuse the video...as you can tell, not really my strong point in making videos but I hope it gets the point across."
Updates (July 13):
I took down the video as too many people said that on mobile devices it went straight to the video but not the page but you can still get it HERE.
I added in some more rewards as I had a few people ask about including some Deadworld books as incentives so those have been added.
The Rewards were centered on printed books rather than prints, keychains, stickers, t-shirts, etc. The Reward Incentives include other books from the creative team. The Rewards are showcased below to give an indication of what they are. And for foreign orders, sorry for the insanely high price of shipping but that's what it is now.
In addition to some pages shown below, the website has additional pages here. Plus, there is the dropbox link that has a 20 page preview.
The Creative Team:
Created and written by Gary Reed, illustrated by Wayne Reid.
Gary Reed- Writer of acclaimed series such as Saint Germaine, Baker Street, Renfield, and Deadworld, Gary is known for his insightful and well researched storylines with an emphasis on character narratives. He has been nominated (and even won some) for awards diverse as the Harveys, Don Thompson, Shel Dorf, Ghastlies, and others.
Wayne Reid- Wayne is considered an “old type” artist as his style is very reminiscent of the class black and white days of Eerie and Creepy. Many of his projects have been historically based and working with Gary Reed (see some titles above) but Wayne has also drawn other comics including H.P. Lovecraft, westerns, mysteries, and more.
Mark Bloodworth- Artist on Clive Barker’s Hellraiser for Marvel Comics, Deadworld, Midnight Marquee and many others, Mark contributes a short tale contained within the story.
Nate Pride- An artist in his own right (B&N Classics, Mouse Guard), Nate was the long time production manager at Caliber Comics and has lettered 100s of comics from Image, IDW, Caliber, and more.
How the Money Will be Used.
After the printing and shipping are deducted, the majority of the money will go to the artist with the letterer being paid as well. If the goal is exceeded, the creative team is geared to start working on the second graphic novel which deals with a Voodoo cult that infests Storyville.
Risks and challenges
The risks are obvious...not obtaining enough money to release the project via kickstarter. However, since the book in nearly 90% complete, we will find some way to get it out. We chose kickstarter over traditional distribution because we think we can find our core audience here and provide some unique items that would have problems getting properly distributed in traditional methods.
One of the biggest challenges is configuring the shipping for foreign pledges and because of the inherent risks, we have decided not to make the original art available for the foreign backers which is regrettable.
