This all started 10 years ago (has it been that long?!) with the creation and printing of my first privately printed book Cowlick, about a boy who woke up one morning to find that his hair would not sit down. Created entirely on the computer, this was a labor of love to get printed and distributed to schools.
When it came time for my second book to start being worked up, the funding just wouldn't materialize.
I market my books directly to the schools by making author appearances. When I was a child in elementary school, Maurice Sendak visited my school to read and promote "Where the Wild Things Are." While I do not remember a word of what he said, or any specific details, I DO remember the feeling it left inside of me... I wanted to do what he did! I wanted to write, and draw and share my books with the world. I never got over that feeling. So after completing Cowlick, I did the same thing for other children. The fan mail, and hugs, and amazing support I got in return caused me to self-describe as a "Rockstar at the Elementary School Level."
I would like to continue this business model, and just need a new book to pave the way!
If I reach my goal of $9000 I can get my book printed as a soft cover and distribute as I did before. The backing pays for book production AND travel costs for the marketing of the books directly to schools via author appearances.
$15000 pays for the book to be printed hardcover instead (something the parents and children requested last time.) It will also cover some of the travel fees associated with marketing directly to schools.
Anything over $16000 would widen my circle (I usually visit Washington and Oregon schools - anything within a days drive of my house.) Over $20k and I would be able to travel to other areas, and line up school visit weeks to distribute my book.
So one night a farmer gets a knock on the door and a single horse rushes past him and hops into his bed - followed by two cows, three sheep, four very clever pigs, cats, dogs, geese, ducks and chickens. The farmer dreams of participating in a horse race, darning socks, eating cookies and milk, and might have ended up with fleas... In the end a cacophony of chaos ends up in the farmer's bedroom, and he ends up sleeping in the barn dreaming of an empty bed.
This is a counting book, but not necessarily for younger children. This story has been read to ages all the way to 93, and not one age group has ever said anything derogatory about the reading level or story. (Actually the older the reader is, the better they like it!)
The entire book is created on the computer via several desktop programs. I have been creating computer based artwork for over 10 years now, and honestly, a real set of paint would probably scare me now! (No edit:undo!!!)
I don't want to ruin the story or the fun by sharing the entire thing with you, but I am about a month short of finishing the book completely.
I apologize for my video making skills. I am an author and an illustrator, but definitely not a filmmaker. This was my first attempt at making a video of any type. I am just happy it plays!
Also! I just found out about "Kicking it Forward" What an AWESOME idea, and I will be happy to participate in this program! Until three days ago I did not even know that Kickstarter existed. What an amazing community and what a great way to give back to help others realize their dreams!
