Victorian Bareknuckle League
Revenge for the murder of her lover at a bareknuckle bout sends Ms Figg on a dark and violent descent into the Bareknuckle League.
Victorian Bareknuckle League is a steampunk tale of bloody knuckles and high crime set in a fantasy era Victorian London. Young Millicent Figg witnesses the brutal murder of her lover at a bareknuckle bout and sets out for revenge. Aided by the world’s greatest detective she attempts to find those responsible before she becomes as violent and ruthless as those she is fighting against…
Men, women, children. Gin soaked thieves and claret swilling aristocrats. Slaves and kings. Weathered fishermen, navvies carved from the earth by hardship and toil. The bold, the beautiful, the circus freaks, the forgotten urchins and street dwellers. Gypsies, brothel madams, conjurers and illusionists. The occultists and the strange. Con men and piss artists. Pearly kings and queens. Chinese and Jewish immigrants. The Irish, Scottish, Londoners, Yorkshiremen. The clergy, the revolutionaries. All come looking for death, glory and redemption in the Victorian Bareknuckle League.

Victorian Bareknuckle League is the first comic book by me, Carl Jackson. I am a Music teacher from the U.K. currently residing in Budapest, Hungary. In some form or other I have had these characters around for years, doodled in notebooks or floating around in my head. It was only recently I pulled them together with a plot and a reason to exist.
The idea germinated as a videogame. A steampunk version of Mortal Kombat, set in various locations around Britain. However, I have no idea how to create a videogame or where to start. I do know a lot about comics though. I started reading them when I was about three years old and my old man would read me the little comic books that you got with He-Man figures. By about five I had progressed onto Marvel comics. Back in the day, you could hardly get any Marvel stuff in the U.K. I would get these Marvel U.K. American reprints and if I saved my money every month we would go on a trip to the next town because they had a real comic book shop that sold old comics and U.S. imports. Add to this mix an obsession with Street Fighter (still unbeaten on the Mega Drive with Vega and Chun Li. Even when playing extremely drunk), an encyclopaedic knowledge of mid card WWE attitude era wrestlers (still a travesty Steve Blackman never held the Intercontinental title) and you probably have a rough idea of what to expect in this book.
The art work is done by Philippines based artist Jake Bilbao. Jake has worked for some of the top names, drawing a Wolverine comic for Marvel and working on the Pathfinder title for Dynamite.
Our cover has been drawn by superstar artist Maria Sanapo, who currently works for DC comics and Zenescope.
The colouring is done by Romanian artist Pika. Pika is primarily an illustrator but I asked her to work on the book after catching a glimpse of her outstanding colouring skills. The book is hand coloured in watercolour and gouache giving it a depth and warmth I think is very often lacking in digital colouring.
Millicent Figg. The Red Doll. Peace loving, gentle young lady turned into a well-honed fighting machine. Slowly becoming consumed by revenge.
Van Der Brouck. Britain’s most famous Detective. Concert harpist. Prize winning jockey. Tough exterior with a soft centre.
Harvester. Mysterious assassin.
M'Butu. From slave to aristocracy. Current champion. He will do anything to stay there.
Whitey Aller. Former champion who now prefers gin and whores to fighting. Hero of the people. They are still waiting patiently for his comeback.
This is the cost of paying Jake and Pika. Yes, they are professional at this and do need to feed and clothe themselves and their families. The cover was paid for by myself and does not come out of the pot. In fact I am not making anything from the writing and lettering which I have done myself but I do hope you sign up to the mailing list and get on board so that at some point in the future I may also be able to do this on a full time basis.
Printed in the U.K. 24 pages. Gloss inside and out. 270x170mm size (That’s US standard comic size).
All comics will be in a tough, card backed envelope and will be boarded and bagged. Any comic that comes to you damaged will be replaced. I am based in Budapest so will be posting the comics from here.

Risks and challenges
Hopefully everything will go according to plan! This is our second time on Kickstarter and we have streamlined the project, responding to feedback from backers. Our reward tiers are now easier to understand, with some rewards added and some taken away. The total needed to complete the project has been lowered by basically printing less comics and me buying all the postage stuff myself. The standard comic is also cheaper with delivery included anywhere in the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
