About this project
Limited offer: $25 donation gets you Ten Million Steps! (That's how you stretch your dollars....Not your legs)
About the project: In 2004 Joe Hurley walked the entire length of Route 6, a byway that meanders across the nation from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Long Beach, California. It was the longest transcontinental highway in the late 1930’s.
Joe decided to walk the entire 3,600 miles of Route 6, discovering America step-by-step, along with myself (the photographer). We searched the heartbeat of the nation at the start of the 21st Century, trekking through 14 States and more than 500 Communities. Our days were filled with struggles and triumphant moments.
Our weekly task was to compile and submit articles & photographs in 12 newspapers across the nation. Along the way we talked to thousands of people, sometimes traveling off our path in pursuit of exceptional stories or unique locations. We brought light to those places you didn't know existed and told stories about people you will never forget.
How did the project come about: This journey was born from an idea and executed by simple determination. Initially Joe looked for sponsorship, but came up empty. This was not going to put a damper on his project. Personally funded by Joe, we set out on this journey armed with a few bags each, his personal car Geo Metro, and what started as a 2-person effort eventually turned into a grass-root endeavor. Step-by-step we gained presence and soon enough complete strangers graciously provided us with shelter, food and donations to ensure we finished our goal. We believed in what we were doing and so did the public.
Why we are making this book: As we documented this cross-section of America, it became apparent that hundreds of personal stories and photographs would never make it into the weekly publications. We knew we-had-to-do-a Book! There was just too much good material not to! How many people do you know who have had the opportunity to travel this vast nation one step at a time; not for personal gain, but to be the voice of the people who represent the heart of America?
Where the book stands now: After a few publishing woes Joe and I took it upon ourselves to see this project through and decided to self-publish. We contacted our old Webmaster who updated our website- www.route6walk and found a wonderful book designer, who is now part of our team. As of January 2012, the entire book has been laid out and we look forward to seeing it printed by this spring.
Why we need your support: We are asking for your support for the same reasons that kept us going during our journey. It is our hope the same grass-root entrepreneurial spirit that helped us across the finish line will help us complete this book.
Your donation not only helps in the design, printing & publishing of “Ten Million Steps,” but without your support we may have to cut essential stories and photos, or we might have to reduce the number of copies, thus increasing the price. The more books we can print the less each one costs! The great news is if you donate $25 (includes shipping) and more it guarantees you your very own copy!
We sincerely appreciate your support.
