About this project
BACK TO THE FUTURE AGAIN
A KICKSTARTER DOCUMENTARY
25 years ago the creative team behind the ‘Back to the Future’ franchise set out to imagine the year 2015. As that actual year approaches, how close were their estimations of life in the new millennium?
With only a short time to go before we're in the year 2015 we need to begin this documentary within the next few months. We will never again get an opportunity to celebrate this opportunity, that’s why we need your support.
In 1989 Robert Zemekis and his team released the sequel to the immensely successful film ‘Back to the Future’. In this new adaptation the main characters travel to the future, specifically to the year 2015, and experience all kinds of weird and wonderful inventions that the production team imagined would be present in the then, distant future.
Turn the clock forward 25 years and we are only a short time away from living in the very future that Doc Brown and Marty McFly travelled to. But when we get there, what will we expect? How far off is the flying car? Do sports shoes with electric laces really exist? And what about the infamous Hoverboard?
‘Back to the Future Again’ takes a eye-opening look at the progress of science and compares it to the creative vision that Robert Zemekis, Bob Gale and their team had back in 1989.
Featuring interviews from the original crew, and from modern day experts, 'Back to the Future Again' will transport the viewer on a quest to see if the world of the film is anywhere close to our world now.
It’ll be fun, enlightening and filled with ‘Back to the Future’ wonder. Anyone who enjoys the ‘Back to the Future’ franchise won’t want to miss this.
Where are we now?
We’ve spoken to Universal Pictures and Dreamworks and have clearance from them to produce this programme – principally because it is based on their intellectual property.
We have also been speaking to members of the film’s crew and many are willing to be interviewed. A few to mention are:
- BOB GALE – Writer/Producer of BTTF
- JOHN BELL – Key designer of 2015
- JOANNA JOHNSTON – Costume Designer
- MICHAEL LANTIERI – Mechanical FX Supervisor
- MARJORIE MCSHIRLEY – Art Director
But the crew’s imagination will only make up half of the documentary. We have also contacted a variety of experts and inventors who have similarly agreed to be interviewed, including Cybernetic Specialists, Futurologists and Fashion Designers.
We have also sourced companies that currently provide some of that future technology.
Why do we need your support?
We’ve spoken to a few broadcasters regarding the project. While their enthusiasm for 'Back to the Future Again' has been awesome, the clearance fees and license rights put the documentary outside of their budgets for a programme of this type.
We could have just let the project fade into a memory, but it’s simply too exciting! We therefore decided to put it to the huge community of fans out there.
This is your chance to be part of the ‘Back to the Future’ story. Join us in making this project a reality.
Where the Money goes?
So in case you are wondering where all the money will go, we’re going to be as transparent as possible.
In order to use clips from the film, which includes project permissions, studio license fees, actors’ image re-use fees and soundtrack fees, we’re going to need to set aside £250,000.
This will leave us with about £160,000 to make this documentary. Our dedicated small team are going to work for “I LOVE THIS PROJECT’ rates to help us out, which is amazing as the travel, accommodation and sustenance costs will be quite high - It will take us a month to film, and during that time we will need to travel across the USA, Europe, China and Japan.
We also need to pay for post-production as well as provide all you lovely supporters with your packages.
We’ve planned everything to the letter.
Our crew members are all in place – with a few backups lined up in the event of schedule conflicts. All are amazingly talented individuals who possess a deep love for the ‘Back to the Future’ franchise.
Our core team, the visionaries who have been working on this for the last 9 months, include:
JOHN PLASKETT – Producer/Director
Having been in the broadcast industry for over a decade, John comes from a post production background. Having produced and directed a variety of Television series over the last few years this is a project right down his street.
Having been a science fiction fan all his life this project is in safe hands, as his passion for delivering entertaining projects to the highest quality is what he is all about.
CRISI PETERS - Assistant Producer
Crisi is relatively new to the industry but has a proven track record on a number of projects to date. Her dedication to this project has gone well beyond the call of duty and she’s the main point of contact with many of our contributors.
Friendly, approachable and full of life, her desire to produce the best projects is rampant, and her keen eye for what entertains us is a special gift.
ALEC LINDSELL – D.O.P
Like John, Alec has had a successful career in the broadcast industry for over a decade. With a fabulous eye for a great shot, Alec has been full of ideas and excitement regarding this project.
For the last few years he has been producing and directing a number of music documentaries and his ‘can do’ attitude and friendly personality allow him to deal with even the most famous individual with ease.
So we hope you like the rewards we have lined up. Every pledge of support means the world to us – we’d love to give you more in return, but we need to meet our target somehow. So what do some of our rewards look like?
The postcard will be designed by the director and sent out to everyone who helped us reach our target. It’s our way of saying thank you to you all.
Specially designed by our team, these T-Shirts will only be available to supporters of our project. We decided to do something a little tongue in cheek, and that is of course relevant to our project.
The T-shirt will have the 'Back to the Future Again' logo on the front, with “It’s 2015 – keep an eye out for flying DeLoreans” written on the back.
Here is an rough guide to what the T-Shirt will look like, don't forget you’ll need to let us know your size.
The Digital Download
So we want as many of our supporters as possible to be able to see the project they are a part of – a very important part! Thanks to the technology of today we can supply everyone who pledges £15 or more, a copy of Back to the Future Again!
So obviously we need to offer hard copies of ‘Back to the Future Again’ and this represents the first type of these. The DVD will be in standard definition and will be professionally packaged like you would expect. And don’t worry about where you are either, we’ll provide you with the correct format of DVD for your region.
We also promise never to release 'Back to the Future Again' as a DVD on its own. This makes the product a limited edition DVD and only available to those who pledge £30 or more.
The Bluray/DVD set
Quite simply this is the HD version of the documentary for you to own. Not only will you get the documentary in Bluray, but it’ll also come with a copy on DVD as well, packaged together in the same professional case. Like the DVD we don’t plan on releasing this documentary on it’s own, so only those supporters who pledge £50 or more will get a copy – also making it a limited edition.
Our designer Hoodie is the upgrade from the T-Shirt. Like the T-shirt these Hoodies will have the ‘Back to the Future Again’ logo on the front, and “It’s 2015 – Keep an eye out for Flying DeLoreans” on the back. Super stylish!
Here is an rough guide to what the Hoodie will look like, don't forget you’ll need to let us know your size.
The Premiere Screening
To celebrate the completion of ‘Back to the Future Again’ we’re going to have an official premiere of the documentary, hosted in the beautiful English seaside town of Folkestone where the idea was conceived.
The screening will take place in the late afternoon and we’ll even sort out a red carpet, it’s what the project deserves and it’ll make us all feel awesome!
The After Party
Held in the evening of the Premiere Screening, the after party will be a time to relax and have fun. The 'Back to the Future Again' team will be there, as will like-minded supporters of the project. We’ll be holding this event near to the premiere screening so you won’t have to travel too far and don’t worry, its going to be a lavish affair. This event is for adults only.
Dinner with the Team
10 lucky supporters will be joining the team for dinner on the evening of the Premiere Screening. The dinner will take place between the screening and the after party, at a prestigious restaurant, and you’ll get quality time with us and we promise we’ll be on our best behaviour.
5 lucky people will pledge enough to get one of these. We’ll be taking 5 replicas of Marty McFly’s pink hoverboard from the movie with us whilst filming, so we’ll get as many of the Back to the Future Part 2 crew members we interview to sign them as possible.
They will be extremely rare, and totally unique, as we’ll even sign them as well. Please note that these boards don’t hover, they just look the part.
Risks and challenges
We have been fortunate that nearly everyone we have contacted regarding this project has been immensely supportive. But like all things incomplete, there are still some risks present.
The biggest risk to the project is meeting our financial target. We will be dedicating our time to spreading the word about “Back Again to the Future”, and ask that you do the same. The only way we are gonna do this is if we work together. And we believe in you.
While we have agreements in principal regarding access to anything ‘Back to the Future’ related, those deals are only officially binding once money changes hands. We don’t anticipate any problems when the time comes and you can rest assured that we already have back up scenarios should the worst happen in this area.
Availability will be our biggest hurdle to jump. Many of the original Back to the future Part 2 crew members are working on other projects – of course they are, they are fabulous at what they do – so arranging interview times will be tricky, but absolutely not impossible.
We will keep everyone updated as we move along the project and if there is a delay in its production we hope it won’t be for long. After all, as we’ve said, time is of the essence.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
