About

Disclaimer: The video shown on this Kickstarter is not footage from the biopic. The footage shown is from the “DeHaven Irby’s Reasonable Doubt” documentary which is being released soon on DeHaven444.com.

The true stories on DeHaven's Instagram page are some of the most insightful and entertaining tales ever read! The way his stories are told leaves vivid images in your mind, but you know to get the full effect of great storytelling is through the moving picture format! If you visit DeHaven's Instagram page (@DeHaven444) you will read encouraging comments and a demand for visuals to his stories! This Kickstarter is created to raise funds for the DeHaven mini-series to be distributed through DeHaven444.com.

Having DeHaven Irby consulting, this pilot will be an entertaining biopic based around DeHaven Irby and his exploits in the drug game as well as the emotional ups and downs between hustlers, which is rarely shown in this medium. Anyone familiar with the history and mythos of Jay-Z will know who DeHaven Irby is and how important he was to the billionaire hip-hop mogul. As a matter of fact, Dehaven is the person responsible for introducing Jay-Z to the drug game and you can also say a silent partner with the creation of Roc A Fella Records. Still, before all of that, DeHaven and Jay-Z were brothers! They shared the same clothes, were godparents to each other's children and made plans to become great together. Not surprisingly enough is the fact that both of their families intertwined with one another. DeHaven's mother and Jay-Z's mother were best friends! Both families had a strong bond with each other, so these men really experienced a kinship of true brotherhood.

This brotherhood was even documented in Jay-Z's own words in his book "Decoded". Here's a selection from Jay-Z's book Decoded where he talks about his trip to East NY Brooklyn with DeHaven (called Hill in the book).

Jay-Z's Decoded.
Jay-Z's Decoded.

"My man Hill (names changed to protect the guilty) and I were close, and even before we got in the game we were living through the changes it brought. I’d ride the train all the way to East New York with him, he’d get off, go see his girl, and I’d ride back to Marcy alone. One time we were on the train heading to Hill’s chick’s house and these niggas across the aisle just started ice grilling us. We were outnumbered and only had one gun between us, but we grilled them right back. Nothing jumped off and eventually, we got off the train. East New York was one of the most serious neighborhoods in the city, so we agreed that he’d hold on to the gun when he decided to spend the night out there. I hit the train alone to head back to Marcy. On the way back, I ran into the same dudes.

Unbelievable. I was sitting on the train next to another young guy who just happened to be there when they came through the car. They sat across the aisle from me. They wanted something with me real bad, but they couldn’t figure out if the guy sitting next to me was with me. He wasn’t. Still, I was looking at them like I’d murder them for staring at me. When the guy next to me got off they grilled at me for a minute. It was on. It wasn’t a rare thing to have to fight your way home. Something as meaningless as a glance often ended up in a scuffle — and worse. You could get killed just for riding in the wrong train at the wrong time.

I started to think that since I was risking my life anyway, I might as well get paid for it. It was that simple. One day Hill told me he was selling crack he was getting from a guy named Dee Dee. I told him I wanted to be down and he took me to meet the dude. I remember Dee Dee talking to us in a professional tone, taking his time so we’d really understand him. He explained that hustling was a business but it also had certain obvious, inherent risks, so we had to be disciplined. He knew that, like him, neither of us even smoked weed, so he wasn’t worried that we’d get high off of the work, but he wanted to stress how real the game was, that as a hustle it required vision and dedication. We thought we had both. Plus, my friend had a cousin in Trenton, New Jersey, doing the same thing. All we needed were Metroliner tickets to join him. When Dee Dee was murdered, it was like something out of a mob movie. They cut his balls off and stuffed them in his mouth and shot him in the back of the head, execution style. You would think that would be enough to keep two fifteen-year-olds off the turnpike with a pocketful of white tops. But you’d be wrong."

With such a connection to a legendary icon, DeHaven’s story is comparatively just as legendary in the streets, with his ascension into the world of drug trafficking and sales. This series will detail DeHaven’s early life growing up in Marcy Projects and to him becoming a made man controlling “paper routes” throughout portions of the East Coast. Important questions will also be answered for avid Jay-Z fans, especially the famous line in Jay-Z’s song “No Hook”, where the rappers say “So fuck DeHaven for caving, that’s why we don’t speak. Made men ain’t supposed to make statements.” Jay has, of course, referenced their relationship numerous times on wax, touching the subject on tracks such as “A Week Ago”, “It Ain’t Personal”, “December 4th” and “Black Republican”. However, even though the ties to Jay-Z is there, this story is about DeHaven and his adventures. That's why we need your support so we can produce a superior show that will detail these adventures in a high quality, entertaining way and finally answer all the questions people following DeHaven have been asking for years!

Below is an audio clip from Jay-Z's "No Hook" off of the American Gangster soundtrack where Jay mentions DeHaven's name.

Additionally, DeHaven was interviewed by Zack O'Malley Greenburg, the author of the incredible biography "Empire State Of Mind" to which DeHaven is noted as the person responsible for Jay-Z's foray into the drug game.

The funds appropriated from this Kickstarter will provide the necessary assistance and tools to ensure a high-value project that will stand comparable to Hollywood standards. We need to scale up our production resources, hire more crew and specialized services to ensure the project is made to its highest caliber.

Below are a few, out of many, YouTube links, an older Hip Hop DX link and audio highlighting the popularity and level of interest in the story of DeHaven Irby.
