Absolute Zero is a game that fills the need of a fun way for students to practice operations with integers. Number line confusion as well as adding, subtracting, determining the difference, multiplying, and dividing integers are problems that many students face. The Absolute Zero card game helps students to better understand how negative and positive integers relate to each other and how to find the difference between a given number of integers in a fast-paced, competitive race to get absolute zero!
This project has been a family affair. My son TJ worked with me to develop the rules for the game; he also became my video editor. My daughter, Delany, was my graphic designer for the playing cards and the Absolute Zero logo. My husband Rusty offered support and encouragement throughout the process. He also developed the best way to score the game and he designed the score sheet.
Funds raised from this successful Kickstarter campaign will give me the needed capital to place my first full order from the manufacturer. I have successfully commissioned two test runs of production and worked out the few kinks in design and functionality. These cards may cost a bit more than other game cards on the market but I wanted a high quality product that will hold up year after year in a classroom or home full of children. Once these cards are made available to the public, teachers and parents will have a better option to make math engaging and students will have a fun way to improve their math skills.
Risks and challenges
I feel very confident in this project. As a middle school math teacher and parent, I know there is already a demand. I have created a website and researched online selling platforms. The special edition Absolute Zero decks going to the first 90 $15 backers have already been produced and will be mailed as soon as the successful campaign is over. The other decks will be purchased with the proceeds from this campaign. Since I have already received two sample orders from the manufacturer, I feel confident about their ability to supply me with a quality product in a timely manner.
A current obstacle but future goal is to find funding and a designer for an Absolute Zero App.
