West-coast music & performance ensemble Corpus Callosum strikes eastward to discover the riches in the lands beyond the Rockies.
Corpus Callosum is a music & performance ensemble that makes artistic folk music, experimental puppet shows and jokes about tardigrades. We are striking out across the country for the first time this Summer, with your help. While we tour the West Coast from Seattle to Los Angeles every year, something we have never been able to do as a group is take our music & performance across the Rockies.
the KITCHENS project
In our West Coast adventures we sleep like sardines in the living rooms of some very gracious hosts (most of which we met along the way). We are so inspired by the places where we stay that we have aggregated hours upon hours of recording experiments. For this tour we're focusing on kitchens (the most characterizing room of any house), and will be making a series of music videos amid our hosts' pots and pans. In so doing we will hopefully capture something intangible about the breadth of the country. This series of music videos will be your reward for making this tour happen, in addition to the postcards, watercolors, mix tapes and podcast that individual members of the band are offering. (I suppose the most important reward, however, will be the promise that this brave first tour will give us footing for future national tours.)
First national tours are always hard for independent bands. Any band would be lucky to break even on their first national tour, and the cards are stacked against us with 7 band members, an unusually large tow of instruments, and our no-record-label/DIY ethic. The hurdle of a first national tour is huge, which is why we've never been able to attempt a tour beyond the West Coast. In addition to the usual footwork of finding places to sleep, things to eat, and months of calling up distant venues, what we need to make this happen is postage for promotional posters & CDs, a tour vehicle that can carry all of us together (we'll be trading in our minivan), and quite a few gallons of diesel fuel. It is our estimation that this tour will set us back almost $13,000, and it being our first time across the country, we don't expect to gross more than $2000 from all those performances. Pooling all our pocket money, we can front 50% of the debt ourselves, but for the remaining $5500 we need some help.
Our proposed budget is the bare-minimum to get us on the road. If we can raise even $750 more than our goal we would, for example, be able to afford a box of tshirts (of which we sold out in 2009 and haven't been able to restock since). If we can raise another $1500 we may even be able to convert our vehicle to biodiesel.
