The day I met Elijah "Lucky" Miller, I told him I wanted to write a children's book about him. Why a children's book? Because I felt like a kid listening to his stories of great ballplayers ranging from Josh Gibson to Roberto Clemente to Hank Aaron. He was the funny, clever grandfather we all wish we had.
The illustrations -- old photos combined with new ones -- looked so real that when he saw them Elijah insisted "That's me!" He had them by his bedside when he passed away at the age of 104.
That's a long life, but I think we can do better. If you help me raise $1,500 to print 500 copies of the book, we can share his stories with so many more people. Thanks to you, Lucky will live forever.
Risks and challenges
We have overcome our biggest challenge, producing the book. We also have a publisher, Pneuma Publishing Intl. (www.pneumapublishing.com), and a printer, Zenger Group (www.zenger.com).
The upside of using Kickstarter to finance publication is that we can easily tweak any part of the book before it goes to press. Our backers can be our editors!
