About this project

Strategies will not only be Kingston's first board games cafe, but it will also be the first of its kind to use a community development model in order to build the community through shared interest.  In addition to catering for competitive players through a range of leagues and tournaments, we are also developing a number of programs aimed at increasing community participation, including after school and school holidays programs; discounted social hours for seniors; and corporate team building activities.

Our carefully selected and trained staff will be able to recommend appropriate games, teach new games and host a range of fun activities for parties and other program events.

We have already secured a lease on Gardiners Road, in the heart of Kingston's community center, and are completing the design of what we hope will create the perfect game space, whilst ensuring accessibility for all members of society.

We have set aside a substantial budget to ensure that the building is fitted out to code, but we still need funding for furniture - large wooden shelving to host our games, and even sized tables on which to play them, as well as seating comfortable enough to play through your favorite games.   We are also looking to obtain more games (including multiple copies of some of the most popular games) to enhance our existing collection.

So why should you support us in this venture?   Well, if you love board games as much as we do, then you will understand the importance of having somewhere to play whilst expanding your social network of friends who share your interests.   Teachers, parents and social workers will understand the value of learning through play, with kids not only enhancing their reading and mental arithmetic, but also developing new skills such as planning, resource management, negotiating and working with others to meet their objectives in cooperative games.   Seniors will welcome the opportunity to challenge their minds while reducing the impact of isolation which so often follows departure from the workplace.   And if you are already part of the board game industry - whether designers, publishers, illustrators - then this is an opportunity to support market development, whilst showcasing your work to a diverse community.

Risks and challenges

Creating any sort of cafe comes with challenges. Ensuring that our kitchen is fully compliant, our doors and washrooms fully accessible, our space is planned to accommodate all the different styles of players - these are all challenges which have already impacted significantly on our timeline and budget. But we are almost there, with work set to begin on the building on 22 September. Now we just need to ensure that we can furnish the place in a way which is most conducive to comfortable game play and to ensure that we have the widest possible selection of games available.

Our biggest challenge after funding will be the timely delivery of furniture and games. We are already building relationships with local and international suppliers to ensure that we will be able to pull out all the stops to open our doors by the end of October.

The final piece of the jigsaw will be getting the right staff - people who live and breathe the games, but also understand the service industry and know how to teach others how to play.
