If you did not make it through the full video, watch this very short synopsis.
It started back in 1992. A young Matt was walking his dog Buddy to the local park. When entering the park, Matt removed Buddy’s leash and hung it on a hook – it was too cumbersome to carry while he and Buddy played. After an hour of play, they decided to go home. On his way out of the park, Matt went to pick up the leash but it was gone. Matt had to walk back home hunched over, holding Buddy by the collar. He thought, “there must be a better way”. That night, Matt got some Hook and Loop tape off a pair of old Kangaroo shoes and carefully wrapped the leash around Buddy’s neck, securing it with the hook and loop tape. From that first crude design Matt went on to design a few more hook and loop designs, and learning that dog hair and hook and loop tape are not friends. With this hairy discovery, coupled with the busy life of a teenage boy, Matt decided to shelf the idea.
Fast forward 20 years or so. Matt adopted his new best friend seVen. seVen was always ready for fun, but usually had to wait for Matt to find the leash. After going to dog parks and beaches with seVen, Matt took that old idea off the shelf and started to tinker with it. This time, instead of hook and loop tape Matt tried everything from a simple tape measure to a key chain retractor to seVen’s collar. seVen made a deal with Matt that if he created a small enough, comfortable enough, dog-hair-friendly enough leash, seVen he would carry it himself.
Matt created many versions of his idea until he found the right combination of strength, comfort, size and easy functionality. He collaborated with a top-notch engineering firm to perfect his idea. And, PAWSE was born.
The story doesn’t end here, but continues with your help. Please help Buddy, seVen, and me continue the Pawse story.
The professional sourcing company we have partnered with has manufactured other products that have similar components to PAWSE, as well as high tech gear. They have an experienced team in the field to assist with quality control, shipping and other logistics. We want you to have your PAWSE as soon as possible. Here’s our plan to achieve that:
• October/November/December: Make lots of new Kickstarter friends, execute manufacturing agreements/standards
• December: Finalize the engineering and prototype iterations and place the tooling orders
• December/January: Tooling build-out and procurement of raw materials and components
• January: Part qualification and pre-production builds, pilot production, quality assurance and product validation
• February: Begin manufacturing for the injection molded and mechanical parts
• February/March: Finalize the assembly and shipment process and begin fulfillment
Risks and challenges
We at PAWSE have worked hard to make sure that this good idea gets executed correctly. We have been careful to make sure that we got this product ready for Kickstarter, full-scale manufacturing and fulfillment. We have not made it this far alone. We have partnered up with an experienced product-engineering firm and fulfillment center.
MANUFACTURING: A product of this size is relatively expensive and requires expert knowledge to create the tooling to manufacture PAWSE. There is typically a 45 day lead time to create the molds for a product of this size and this is where delays could occur. To minimize that possibility we're working with tooling manufacturers partners with a track record for prompt quality. These partners have manufactured and delivered products similar in scope as ours. This gives us confidence that they will hit their delivery dates.
PRODUCT ADJUSTMENTS: We understand that as PAWSE gets geared up for production, there will likely be some minor adjustments to improve the final product. Pre-production prototypes are made to test and refine the product and allow us to incorporate our adjustments and those suggested by experienced manufacturing partners. These will always be for the benefit of you, the consumer, and we will let you know exactly how and why any are made.
FULFILLMENT: Sometimes things can go wrong that can’t be planned for: a shipment gets lost, a supplier misses a deadline or a machine breaks down. Those things could cause a delay. To minimize the possibility of manufacturing setbacks we will enter the manufacturing stage with a few back-up supplier for each component lined up.
We will be working with manufacturers who have years of experience delivering excellent products in tremendous quantities. There will no doubt be some surprises along the road, but any obstacle will be addressed by combining our internal knowledge with external expertise, and an overall goal of making the best possible product for you.
Even if you don’t have a dog yourself, the advantages of a PAWSE are obvious. Maybe you have a friend who owns a dog? Perhaps a PAWSE would make a great gift for someone you know?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
