About this project
Hello Everyone! We’re Sophie Goldstein and Jenn Jordan, and we’re the creators of Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell.
Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell is set in a world where mythical beings not only roam the earth, but also camp out on your sofa and raid your refrigerator. Gods and demons walk the earth, pay rent, and hold unfulfilling minimum-wage jobs just like everyone else.
In 21st-century Brooklyn, karma can be tracked like a credit score, and our protagonist Darwin Carmichael has a big problem. Due to an unfortunate incident involving some intense snogging, an unbalanced high chair, and a framed image of the Buddha, he acquired a massive karmic deficit. Long story short, he’s going to go to hell...and he should probably do something about that.
You can read all of Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell here.
We started publishing our comic in January 2009 and just finished it this past summer at strip number 360. We would really love to make a beautiful, full color print edition of the comic for our loyal readers and respective moms to cherish for years to come.
In addition to the comics our print edition of the book will feature behind-the-scenes commentary as well as concept art and a few other goodies. We have a number of cool incentives to choose from as well, including a Darwin zombie doll, a Skittles plushie, original art, comics packs, and a special artist edition of the book.
Sophie previously participated in the successful Kickstarter campaign for the horror anthology Sleep of Reason and is November's Artist of the Month on Geek Room. Her work was also featured in Best American Comics 2013, edited by Jeff Smith.
Jenn is working on her doctorate in medieval history at SUNY Stony Brook. After running the now defunct medieval blog Per Omnia Saecula, she now occasionally group-blogs at Modern Medieval. She has contributed several performances to the NYU-run Performing Medieval Narrative database, and has written on using performance to teach medieval literature and history.
Please help us make our comics dream a reality. Thanks for visiting our Kickstarter page, and for your support.
Every day is a fresh hell, but it’s a chance at redemption.
Praise for Darwin Carmichael
"It's like Peanuts with added sex and drugs. And set in a gorgeously colored world where every mythological being is real, and also kind of a dick." -Sylvan Migdal, Curvy
"I love complicated characters and world mythology, and Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell has both in spades. It's fun and colorful and cheeky as hell and has been one of my favorite webcomics for years." -Yuko Ota, JohnnyWander.com
"Skittles may be the best character ever created: a 2000-year-old manticore who was once owned by Oscar Wilde, William Howard Taft, and Batman (to name a few) and who has the personality of a 13-year-old girl. Brilliant." -Mike Braff, Suvudu.com
"DCIGTH is terrific, funny, heartfelt stuff, and you should get in on this while the getting’s good." -Gary Tyrrell, Fleen.com

Risks and challenges
Sophie and Jenn have been working in webcomics since 2009. Although Sophie has a lot of experience preparing mini-comics, this will be our first time working with a professional printer. We have spoken with other web comic artists who have launched successful Kickstarter campaigns about working with printers and handling large-scale distribution, so we are confident that we can bring this project to fruition. We have a lot of gumption. Like, we measure it in metric tons.
The book is complete, so there will be no issues on the creation side. We are still thinking of places where we can store a thousand books containing dangerous levels of awesome, but we are looking at several promising abandoned missile silos and re-purposed Doomsday bunkers. Also, Sophie has a studio.
If anyone has any other concerns or questions about this project, please drop us a line!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
No! In fact, the book will be EVEN LONGER! We are printing the strips one per page to ensure high-quality readability and we'll also be including some additional materials like end-notes and early character sketches. Our estimated page length at this time is 372 pages. That's a big book!
We tried our best to anticipate what people would want in each level but of course there will be special cases. If you're looking to add a tote, book, piece of original art or something else to your level please contact us through the "ask" button below and we'll see what we can do! We only have limited quantities of some of the rewards but in many cases we'll be able to make it work for you!
