If you're here, you're likely wondering what the heck is a "San Gwynn?"
Quick description: San Gwynn is Dr. Strange meets Cheech & Chong in a kitchen.
"San Gwynn" is about a terrible chef with a huge ego, so he gets fired all the time. Plus, he's a flavor alchemist, gifted with the ability to transmute ingredients into other ones. That's a skill he usually only puts into use in order to spite people. San is not a role model.
"San Gwynn" is intended to be a throwback of sorts to old underground comics and the indie books that I loved. Plus food. Everyone loves food. Not everyone loves the idea of knowing how or who their food is made by. San is the embodiment of that.
"San Gwynn" is fully created by me, Clayton Hollifield. I wear all hats, so if you hate something, I'm the guy to yell at.
What exactly is this Kickstarter paying for?
To get "San Gwynn" #3 into print (and to print a couple of San Gwynn-related stickers). That's it. To print two covers, two different stickers, and get that shipped to me (plus KS fees) will be about $500. I'll be using the same POD printer I've used for previous issues, and a sticker printer that handles a lot of band stickers.
I'd love it if this campaign overachieved. That money would enable me to do things like place advertisements in other publications, reprint previous issues, get a new batch of postcards printed, perhaps even sign up for more conventions. Those are all things I need to do. But for now, I'm focused on covering the barest of bones (plus stickers), and greasing the wheels for future issues of "San Gwynn."
The History of San Gwynn
To date, I've self-published three issues of San Gwynn - all currently available digitally on Comixology Submit.
Issue #0 is about a mystic chili cook-off. This story is the only all-ages appropriate one in the series, largely because those were the rules for the anthology ("Spellcasters") this story was originally published in.
Issue #1 is the traditional first issue, one that sees San having problems holding down a job, and making a questionable choice with his girlfriend's credit card.
Issue #2 sees San competing on a television cooking show, "Chomped!"
Issue #3 (that's this one!!!) will have San reaping the rewards of his television appearance. He gets to be a guest star on another TV show, "The Fryer Files," hosted by Clay Harley, a frosted-tipped deep fryer aficionado.
Risks and challenges
The big risk of the project is that, since I'm the sole creator of "San Gwynn," I'll be unable to finish the artwork, due to illness, indifference, or inclement weather. I'm currently in the process of producing the art for San Gwynn #3 (the book is about 1/3rd drawn). I am not the fastest artist in the world, but I feel that setting a delivery date for June is reasonable (and leaves enough time for the printers to do their thing). I'll be making appearances at conventions in June, and want to have the book available for purchase at those shows.
Beyond that, I have produced comic books before (and I'm familiar with the software I use for digital preparation), and I don't anticipate any problems in getting the material ready for print, delivering files to the printers, or then mailing out the completed projects.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
