This project will be an all-new 20 page RETURN FROM THE DEAD of one of my most popular cult characters, Gnatrat. How does a rat who has been dead for over a decade, and was way too old to be alive anyway when he died, return from the bowels of Hades to beat the crap out of bad guys and terrorists? We'll all find out together when I take a sabbatical and create this comic.
The printed comic will also contain The complete 24 page "Buddy Cops" comic book that I created in 2010, plus a few pages of this and that comics that I will create during the Gnatrat sabbatical. All in all, a 48-page black-and-white comic with color covers will exist that will be the envy of all of your friends and enemies because YOU WILL BE IN IT! Everybody who pledges even a small amount will be mentioned in this comic, and anyone who pledges a larger amount will even have a walk-on part (via their avatar). See Pledge awards list for full details, and make that pledge!
The Plan The money I raise through Kickstarter will be used to cover production costs for the physical printed comic book, and some of the expenses that will be incurred when I take a sabbatical to create the comic. Having a home and family and day job and pets and The Rat Race in general can make it difficult to concentrate on a large project. I took a trip in 2010 and created "Buddy Cops". I'd like to take a trip in 2011 and create "Gnatrat Lives!"
PLEASE NOTE: My "goal" funding will only cover some, not nearly all, of the trip expenses. So be a sport and pledge anyway, even if I have reached my goal. I will be taking the trip and creating the comic, no matter what, if I reach $1,000. But having some extra padding would be sweet!
PLEASE NOTE: If I am so fortunate that I get enough pledges to completely wipe out all of the available original art - please KEEP PLEDGING. If that happens, I'll do another book (and another, etc)
PLEASE NOTE: "Buddy Cops" was a 24-Hour comic challenge. That means that the time that I spent on each page was strictly limited to one hour per page. Gnatrat will not be a 24-Hour comic, and I will allow myself to lavish attention on each and every page.
A Gnatrat Primer The first Gnatrat comic - a Kult Klassik! - was released in 1986.
Later in '86, the adventures of the Dark Gnat continued in "Happy Birthday Gnatrat". Gnatrat went blind in that book because DC Comics lawyers were breathing down his neck and saying he could not wear the Cape and Cowl indefinitely. So he went blind (think of DeNiro getting fat for the movie "Raging Bull" - same dedication to Art with a Capital A!) and morphed into—
DareRat, The 2-in-1 comic book DareRat/Tadpole was released in 1987. Published by me and released during the crash of the "Black-andWhite Boom Crash", this comic scarred me for life and almost put me and my family out in the street!
In 1990 another publisher recruited me to create Gnatrat: The Movie. This is my favorite Gnatrat comic so far, as the plot and art are totally my own, and not a parody of some other mega-famous superhero artist, and the story is more satire than parody, satirizing Hollywood and the Superhero "biz" and lots of stuff!
Also in 1990, Fantagraphics collected and published the first 3 comics, plus new material chronicling the death of Gnatrat. I have always been proud of the fact that Gnatrat tales remain true to the actual life and continuity of Boo Swain, and that remains true to this day. "Gnatrat Lives" is NOT a fictional "What If" story. He has actually risen from the grave, and I expect A-List celebrities to congregate around a new religion based upon his miraculous life and death and life again.
