If you are looking for a new 28mm skirmish game to play but don't want a heavy rule set to wade through and memorise then Mini Gangs is for you! If you want a game to get your kids playing table top games then Mini Gangs is for you!
WHAT IS MINI GANGS?
Mini Gangs is a new rule set from Ramshackle Games that combines ease of play with great strategic options resulting in a quick game with loads of depth. Its ideal for short club games, for playing a campaign and for getting begginers into tabletop battle games.
Mini Gangs can be played in three different ways, each appealing to a different level of gamer.
Gateway- A simple and easy game for beginners. Mini Gangs Gateway is designed to teach beginners how to play table top strategy games. It great for children of 6 years or older as the simple rules mean its easy to understand. It is also good for adults who have never played model based games before. It teaches all the core concepts that are used in more complex games.
Casual- A game for easy play and deep strategy. Mini Gangs Casual adds a deck of cards. These cards represent equipment, weapons and skills for your gang. This adds a layer of depth to the basic rules which makes it ideal for quick games. Whilst being simple, Casual makes for rewarding play. Mini Gangs Casual is great for club or gaming groups as it is a fast paced multi player game.
Hardcore- A sophisticated in-depth gaming experience. Mini Gangs Hardcore features a full points system, campaign rules and scenarios. It expands the game to be a tool for playing any skirmish level encounters with the minimum of inconvenience.
The figures are scaled to 28mm being the average height of a man. Some of the models are slightly smaller or larger.
In Mini Gangs Gateway and Casual, players control a gang of four model characters with each fulfilling a different generic battlefield roll. This campaign focuses on three gangs, the Ironstike Clan, the Bandlerd Finishing School for Girls Field Trip and the Keychain Mohawks. Each has its own unique style. Any of the gangs can be taken as rewards for backing this project and all are supplied in the full set reward. The models are made from polyurethane resin.
HOW TO PLAY MINI GANGS
Players select a gang of four models. These are placed down on a gaming table with model terrain on it. The table can be any size but a half meter square is ideal for 2 to 4 players.
Players then take turns with their gangs. Each character in the gang may make one action per turn. The actions are move, shoot, fight, charge and heal. The movement rules are straight forward with models moving 10cm.
Shooting, fighting and healing use a dice roll to determine if they are successful or not. Characters each have one statistic, called thier Awesomeness. Players must roll under this number when making a fight action. Conversely, they roll over their awesomeness to make shoot or heal actions.
The "under/over" mechanic works by simplifying the statistics normally used in table top battle games. This make Mini Gangs easy to play, easy to teach and great fun. Charging is a move and fight action rolled into one. Some characters can make actions that others cannot. For example, the healer is the only one in the gang who can make a heal action.
This is the basic game, Gateway. Casual and Hardcore use this same game engine but incorporate gang design rules, armour saves and much more.
The simple mechanics do not detract from the depth and richness of the game. It is complex enough to reward strategic and tactical play.
THE RULE BOOK AND CARDS
The 56 page A5 rule book contains all that players need to have games of Mini Gangs Gateway and Hardcore. It also contains 16 full page illustrations and photos.
To play Mini Gangs Causal, players will also need a set of Mini Gangs Cards along with the rule book. The deck is 52 full colour cards which add equipment, skills, armour, strategies, guns and food to the game. Mini Gangs can be played without the cards, as the rules for the cards are all printed in full in the rule book. However, in Casual players use the cards to randomly determine which extra items their gangs gets to play with. The random element streamlines the gangs generation process, making Casual a great choice for experienced players who want a simple, straight forward skirmish.
Games of Mini Gangs Hardcore can also benefit from using the cards, but they are not necessary. Hardcore lets players design their gangs as they choose, meaning some planning time is needed to generate a gang. This versatile yet simple process makes it easy to field a force of your choice.
The rule book also helps to explain the concepts used in play. It contains diagrams illustrating key rules such as line of sight. This can be very helpful when teaching Mini Gangs Gateway to new players or children.
"I first came up with the idea for Mini Gangs when I was trying to make a simple war game. I realised that by using one stat for each character I could make a game that was easy to memorise. The idea is that to shoot, players must roll over this number and to make a combat attack they must roll under the number. By balancing those numbers I could give a good spread of probabilities.
With four character classes I could represent ranged troops, combat troops and troops that were ok at both. I then added in the actions, which limit what the classes can do. For example, a healer with an Awesomeness of 2 is very bad at fighting, but would be a marksman level with a gun! Therefore the healer can not make a shoot action. These three basic rules of under/over, actions and restrictions mean that the different battlefield roles are represented really well with minimal paperwork.
At this point Mini Gangs Gateway was born! Its great for gaming with kids, or players new to tabletop gaming. I find at our local club it can be intimidating for new players to try to get into figure based tabletop battle games. Mini Gangs offers this way in, by using (and teaching) all the core concepts from our favorite strategy games.
However, Gateway doesn't go far enough for more experienced players. I wrote out a list of additional skills and things I wanted to add to the game. In play testing we found that having these on cards gave us a really fun experience. Players in Casual get randomly dealt cards, which they then give out to their gang. Choosing who these go to and then using them during play builds a really deep strategic element into the game. This random set up for gangs also makes for a very speedy game turn around. After a few goes, we were finishing four player games in about forty five minutes or less!
Once we had the cards working, I assigned points to them and the characters, meaning that players could build thier own forces as they wanted. This is Mini Gangs Hardcore, and can be used to put on any kind of game you like."
As usual for Ramshackle Games products, all rewards include free world wide shipping. In this campaign there are 4 types of reward, resin figures, digital files, printed items and the full set.
Each gang is made up of four models. These are the Leader, the Shooter, the Fighter and the Healer. Three gangs of figures cast in high quality polyurethane resin are all available as rewards.
This campaign features models cast in high quality polyurethane resin. This is the most usual resin for model manufacture. It is rigid, lightweight and strong. Most Ramshackle Games models are cast in a different resin, called polyesterresin, so the polyurethane is a new material for us. The casting is being outsourced to a very reputable and talented third party company, so please expect casts of superb quality. As polyurethane is stronger than polyester, it means that the model sculpts can be made more dynamic. Polyester is great in bulk or for production of lower budget models, but because it is less strong, thin sections are not possible. This means careful design of the figures and often less expressive poses are possible. Moving over to polyurethane means better figures in every way.
The rules will be available as digital files. There are two different rule texts. The first is the full 56 page rule book. This contains all the rules needed to play the three types of Mini Gangs games, Gateway, Casual and Hardcore.
The second is a condensed version of Mini Gangs Gateway. This is a free to download quickstart guide for Mini Gangs. It contains all the rules for Mini Gangs Gateway and is intended to be played with beginners or children.
Please visit either of the links below to download an A3 colour pdf of Mini Gangs Casual.
The printed rule book will be available as a reward. Mini Gangs Casual uses a deck of cards and these can be had as a reward too. Finally, there will be printed A3 full colour copies of the Mini Gangs Gateway quick start rule pamphlet.

Risks and challenges
This will be Ramshackle Games' eighth Kicksarter campaign. All of the previous campaigns have funded and been sent out on time.
This project will mainly be out sourced. The printing and resin casting will be handled by reputable third party companies. The first wave of polyurethane figures have been cast out already and they look great as can be seen in the photos. The rule books will be printed by the company that supplied the Nuclear Renaissance rule books, who were very fast and helpful. The decks of cards are being printed by Europe's premier card manufacturers.
However, there may be issues with print production and delivery. Once all the parts are produced and in hand they will be packaged and sent on to the backers. There may be delays with the postal services.
All in all, I am confident of good quality printing and casting, handled in a professional manner, so the risks this project are low.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
