About this project

Mayhem is a tabletop roleplaying game that delivers vivid characters, tight tactical strategy, and fast-playing game mechanics.  We have been playtesting the first volume for several years now, and with your help, we are looking at launching not only a single RPG manual, but a complete tabletop platform.

As a unique and innovative system, there are a lot of reasons to love the Mayhem game.  You can read about them here, or you can click the links to watch a video explaining the game's various components.

I'd rather read.

All right, suit yourself, but if you change your mind there is more information in the videos.

  • The Skill Die system simplifies rolls. Stronger stats roll a larger die, creating a more iconic feel to your character strengths and weaknesses, while at the same time minimizing bonus tracking and keeping the game running smoothly
  • The Skill Cap system provides versatile character customization in a format that is easy to manage. Character creation is fast, so more time is spent playing. Damage, life and magic are all tracked directly on the character sheet, requiring minimal bookkeeping to keep the game running.

  • The Combat Clock timing mechanic creates a system where faster actions trigger more often, while slower actions hit harder.  This creates fast play with enormous tactical depth.  Timing and location matter far more than who can stack up the most numerical bonuses.
  • Dynamic timing means a knife fighter will feel more like a knife fighter, dodging and slicing with fast cuts, while a heavy maul will crush their enemies with big hits.  Character styles are clearly expressed through the gameplay.

  • With many unique character archetypes in a wide variety of styles, your group will never run out of new characters to play.
  •  A variety of races curses and Talents create fantastic characters for your game.  Mad demons, wild fae, divine heroes and vicious animus races are only some of the options available.

  • Versatile Arcane and Elemental magic systems provide variety for spell-casting, while myriad Weapon Techniques do the same for melee fighters.  No two casters will play quite the same, and no two fighters will be using exactly the same strategies.  Even non-combat characters can use Attribute Abilities to give their characters some flair.

  • The Creature Compendium will be sorted by environment, then by skill level, which means that finding the right challenge for your specific group is fast and easy.
  • Also, each supernatural monster will drop components for a robust crafting system, which can be used to build a long list of magic relics for your characters to use.
  • This means that the game can be played as a traditional storytelling game, with pre-built or custom written modules, or as a straight-up hack-and-slash adventure.

  • The Mayhem setting has hundreds of locations and adventure hooks to get you started, across a wide array of unique and interesting fantasy locations.
  • Due to the structure of the skill system and the tools we are making available, Storytelling in the Mayhem system is really easy.  Finding challenges can be as easy as cracking open the book and seeing what's next.

What else do I need to know?

Our design goals are built around style and tactics.  Also we have a sense of humor.  There are puns.  I'm not sorry.

It sounds impressive, but that's a lot of promises.  How do I know you can do it?

Because for the most part, we already have.  Not only have we done a successful Kickstarter before, (Goblin's Breakfast,) but we have been building this particular gaming project for a very long time.  You can see some demos of what we have already accomplished by clicking the links below.

Fair enough.  If I were to jump on board, what would I get?

This stuff:

Okay,  So it's a lot of content already, so what can we look forward to for stretch goals?

Glad you asked!  For starters, this stuff:

All right, when can you deliver?

As you may have noticed, we have a lot of work ahead of us, in various stages of completion. As such, we have put together a production schedule to release content in stages. By releasing individual pieces of content, not only are we able to show our progress over time, but we can also get feedback from our backers, troubleshoot as we go, and keep refining things before we get all the way to print delivery.

Enough  about gaming stuff.  (Said no self-respecting nerd ever.)  What about you guys?   Who are you and why do you do this?

We are Midnight Campaign Games.  A group of friends led by Rob & Aubrey Hicks in Salt Lake City Utah, we are some very dedicated gaming enthusiasts who have put a lot of time and love into getting these kinds of projects off the ground.  We strive to produce games that get a lot of laughs and act as a medium to enjoy the company of the people we care about.  We are not a big company, but this project has been a big part of our lives, and we are extremely excited to get this project into your hands.

With the immediate release of the base game, periodic release of additional player content and modules, the inclusion of the novel and wrapping things up with the printed books as the final piece, we are excited to offer not just a single product for sale, but the opportunity to build an entire gaming platform.

To be be very direct, we are a small company, competing with bigger brands and far bigger budgets, but with your support we can create something amazing.  We need your help, both for fund-raising and to get the feedback and input that will make an already solid game into the the best we can possibly make it.   We are confident that you will be happy with the results.

Risks and challenges

This will be our second kickstarter project. The first, Goblin's Breakfast, was successful thanks to he support of more than 800 backers, and we were able to deliver a quality product that we were very happy with. In many ways, however, that was a practice run for what we are doing now.

Manufacturing is a huge headache. It is possible that we run into delays or snags that prevent things from getting out or getting out on time. Art is also problematic. It is expensive and time-consuming, and we need a LOT of it. However, Aubrey and I have been able to overcome those challenges thus far, and expect to be able to do so again.

If you need examples for the work that we can produce, download the PDF demos above. Or talk to a few of our previous backers. They seem really nice. Players we have worked with in the past have loved the project, and we are confident that you will enjoy it as well.

Thanks for your support!
