Restless Eyeis the newest work by David Neumann/Advanced Beginner Group, a multi-disciplinary company committed to the creation of original, thought-provoking dance works that push the form. Restless Eye will premiere at New York Live Arts in New York City.
Performance Dates: Saturday March 24, Tuesday March 27--Saturday 31 at 7:30pm, Sun Mar 25 and Sun Apr 1 at 5pm.
Advanced Beginner Group's work is often described as 'multi-disciplinary'. For Neumann, using a multi-disciplinary approach is not a stylistic trope, but a fully functional way to articulate a complex world-view, while using the context of a performance to unpack the mind.
Restless Eye is an irrational response to our perceived place in the cosmos while attempting to articulate the universe inside our minds. Restless Eye endeavors to create a multi-layered truth through an assemblage of elements, where language, movement, lighting, sound, projection, set and music work both separately and together to create a unique, beautiful, and surprising experience. The goal is to give everyone in the room (audience, performer and designer) a chance to shift their everyday experience to one that is more aware, curious and full of feeling. Come see a dance-driven performance where people break into song, speak deep truths about dark matter, and dance the patterns that lie beneath the surface. Also, it's funny.
The amazing collaborative team includes:
Sibyl Kempson, text
Tei Blow, video and sound
Christine Shallenberg, lighting
Gordon Landenberger, set
Kaye Voyce, costumes
And the world class performers: Andrew Dinwiddie, Kennis Hawkins, Neal Medlyn, Jeremy Olson and Victoria Roberts-Wierzbowski.
David Neumann is a New York based choreographer/director who works in a wide range of disciplines including opera, film, theater and dance. He is currently developing ‘The Total Bent’ a new musical written by the creators of Tony Award winning ‘Passing Strange’, Stew and Heidi Rodewald. ‘The Total Bent’ goes into previews this Friday at the Public Theater. His work with Advanced Beginner Group gives him the chance to combine disciplines, folding traditional approaches into new shapes.
What people have been saying:
“If there is an argument in the dance world that pits those who believe dance need only to be aesthetically beautiful in a simple, if contemporary manner against those who desire a more intelligent investigation of movement as art, David Neumann’s feedforward, a deeply felt meditation on athletics and the human condition now in its second of a two week run at Dance Theater Workshop, will provide the latter group with solid evidence that theirs is not only the high road, but it is a road no less beautiful, and rife with meaning.”
"Neumann's dances amaze occasionally, amuse often, and constantly lead us to perceive more attentively and thoroughly. That is, they do the most important thing that dances can do. Do pay attention."
