Blood Ensemble heard these words, “Help us further the art form, create the art you want to see.”
Three years ago, the founding members of Blood Ensemble trained with Tectonic Theatre Project (creators of The Laramie Project) in a method of collaborative creation called Moment Work. Over a three week process we learned to write with the elements of the stage: how to treat lights with the same weight as script, costumes with the same importance as direction, set design on level with acting, and how to put fragments written in this respect together into a larger piece using the collective mind as a pen. We arrived back in Seattle inspired and realized we needed to, like Andy Paris said, Create the Art we wanted to see. The Smooth Sailing play had been a topic of conversation among us and soon the group decided to make it our flagship production. We felt that the show would illuminate what Blood Ensemble is all about: tying together two artistic mediums, furthering both art forms at the same time, tapping into two different audiences, and simultaneously taking your breath away. We recruited local theatre artists experienced in devising new works, had an amazing rehearsal with the band in which we explored archetypes, images, and feelings that collectively came up when listening to Smooth Sailing's album and realized: IT WAS ON.Finally, three full years later, this baby is being born. We hope to see this baby have siblings in the near future.
And all I ask is that you help us see it.
