Funding this Kickstarter project will make it possible for me to travel to Turkey where I have been selected as a 2012 resident artist at the Babayan Culture House. I will first arrive in Istanbul and spend several days exploring the historic city and drawing architecture, woven textiles, and the spectacular Iznik tilework. I will then travel to the Babayan and spend a month in the town of Ibrahimpasa in the surreal, rocky landscape of central Turkey's Cappadocia region. While at the residency I will be making ceramic and mixed-media sculpture influenced by my study of the patterns and materials of the region. I will also learn about local techniques of pottery and nomad-style weaving, expanding my understanding of the culture through hands-on interaction.
My study of art history has shown me many ways that the arts of Turkey and the near east have influenced European culture, from the patterns painted on ancient Greek pottery, to the style of robes worn at home by Victorian men. But, I have also seen a long history of mystification and misunderstanding by Western artists, even up to my experiences in college. I want to immerse myself in other traditions so I can interpret their lessons in an insightful way. I believe this will add another layer of depth to the way in which I compose patterns, use materials, and understand my own place in the world.
The funds I raise will help fund part of my expenses for the month long project, which will include transportation, room, board and studio fee, and the cost of art materials. I will be paying for airfare and any other expenses with money I have saved over the past year.
