Help fund Grapevine Video's latest silent movie release: a double feature of the influential "UNCLE TOM'S CABIN" including both the 1903 adaptation directed by Edwin S. Porter and the 1914 version directed by William Robert Daly which stars renowned African-American actor Sam Lucas.
If the project is funded we will complete high-definition 2K transfers of each film. Both the 1903 and 1914 version will be released together on one disc, made available as both a DVD-R and as a Blu-ray (BD-R). The release will include a color cover and a color disc print. Like all our silent film releases the movies will include musical accompaniment and we have already arranged for theater organ scores performed by David Knudtson for both films.
UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (1903)
The earliest film adaptation of the historic novel is also one of the earliest full-length films (which for the era meant 10 to 20 minutes) and is directed by early film pioneer Edwin S. Porter. Using white actors in blackface for the major roles with black performers only appearing as extras it is similar to the traveling plays known as "Tom Shows" of the decades before and includes many stereotypes of the era. It will run about 19 minutes.
UNCLE TOM'S CABIN (1914)
This later film, directed by William Robert Daly, is adapted from George L. Aiken's popular stage adaptation of the historic novel. Starring the well known African-American stage actor Sam Lucas, who broke new ground by here starring as the lead among white co-stars, including Irving Cummings. This feature will run about 54 minutes.

UNCLE TOM'S UNCLE (1926) : $2,000 Stretch Goal
The Our Gang comedy short "Uncle Tom's Uncle" will be added once we reach $2,000 pledged.
In this silent comedy short Hal Roach's Rascals are inspired to put on their own performance of the famous story to an audience of rowdy kids from the neighborhood. Directed by Robert F. McGowan it was the 50th Our Gang short released. This will also be a 2K transfer and has a running time of 15 minutes.
We have released many titles to DVD and Blu-ray over the past but this is our first project on Kickstarter. We have brought this project here as a way to confirm interest in a high quality 2K transfer of this rare material. We hope that together with your support we can make these rare films available in a new high quality release.
Risks and challenges
With years of product releases behind us there is little risk at all. We already have the material and the equipment needed to complete the project. This Kickstarter allows us to confirm interest before producing the DVD and Blu-ray release.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
