About this project
I designed and developed the 'e1 custom balance' pen to be a unique pen that gives you control over the pen's weight distribution and balance.
By adding or removing up to 13 grams of brass weights to the tip and/or to the inside of the barrel end of the pen, you can precisely control the weight distribution and balance of the pen.

A Hi-Tec-C ink cartridge wrapped in a banana peel is nothing more than a banana that writes. The 'e1 custom balance' pen wraps the Hi-Tec-C cartridge in a precision barrel that gives the writer or illustrator ultimate control over their creative hardware.
Using the brass weight system, you can add over 13 grams of weight!
The 'e1 custom balance' pen ships with three large tip weights, three standard tip weights and three barrel end weights. The pen's color will be indicated with a color anodized part, most likely an anodized colored ring.
Why am I asking for the amount I'm asking for?
Numbers. The 'e1 custom balance' pen consists of several precision components. Greater production numbers means I can produce my 'e1' pen at a price point folks can afford.

Why is the Hi-Tec-C, all that?
There are two secrets to the incredible success of the Pilot Hi-Tec-C.
Secret number one involves the three-point mounting system which supports the carbide ball. Three dimples around the tip of the pipe allow the ball to rotate in a natural, frictionless manner. This allows for the highly precise lines that the Pilot Hi-Tec-C is known for.
Secret number two is all about the ink. No matter how small the pen tip is, it is impossible to write fine lines if the ink bleeds. The Hi-Tec-C uses a special "biopolymer ink" that uses resin made from microbes, such as yeast. This allows the ink to flow smoothly and cleanly from the tip, and prevents the ink from bleeding on the page.

Risks and challenges
The pen will be made in the U.S. (Minnesota) which eliminates the issue of dealing with an overseas machine shop. The cost to produce and production schedule has been established with a local machine shop.
Before starting my current line of work as a screen printer, I worked as a machinist, which gives me unique insight to production considerations, e.g. how to design the pen for the most cost and time effective production.
As a screen printer, I have to meet daily customer printing deadlines and schedules which gives me a great understanding of operating within delivery dates.
I have also successfully completed and delivered a Kickstarter printing project.
The aluminum and brass materials used in the pen have good availability and are not subject to extreme pricing spikes.
I have two other local machine shops that can produce the pens if my primary shop, for unforeseen reasons, is unable to move forward with production.
