About this project
When a writer or illustrator picks up a premium pen, what's the first thing they do? Feel for balance. Ink refills, tip size and ink color can be changed. Until the CB + P, a pens balance was set forever. With the CB + P, you can set the pen's balance! No more "one-size-fits-all" weighted pens! Now you can truly make your pen, yours. How you want it to be balanced!
The CB + P is unique to Kickstarter. The CB + P is machined from aluminum and uses a simple but, effective precision brass sliding counterbalance for a unique and innovative way to balance your pen.
The CB + P is designed around the Hi-Tec-C refill and is compatible with the Fisher Space Pen, Pilot G2 and the Uni-Ball Signo 207 refills.
The CB + P Locking Thumb Screw:
- Has a smooth rounded tip which glides effortlessly along the length of the pen barrel.
- The locking screw is also made of aluminum which assures the pen barrel will not mar (I've tried!).
- The amount of finger pressure needed to "lock" the counterweight is minimal.
- The aluminum thumb screw head size is designed to be adjusted with thumb and index finger while holding the pen.
The CB + P is available in two tip & cap alloy options. Aluminum and brass. The aluminum tip weighs about 4.5 grams and the brass tip weighs about 15 grams. The heavier brass tip gives you the option of even more balancing options.
The CB + P features a precision brass counterweight that can be set anywhere along the length of the 7/16" (.437") diameter pen barrel.
The CB + P features an Integrated Threaded Cap. The pen cap is threaded. Unlike magnetic caps, threaded caps DO NOT attract to keys, paper clips or any other ferrous objects. When "capped", the cap is nearly seamless. When writing, the cap secures to the back of the pen and is nearly seamless when posted ("posted" means on the back of the pen when in use).
For CB + P counterbalancing, each pen ships with two (2) brass counterweights. One (1) 25 gram and one (1) 16 gram counterweight.
The CB + P delivers with an aluminum alloy "ink well" style pen stand. The pen stand is heavy and will not easily tip over!
The CB + P primary alloy is 6061 aluminum. Aluminum is lighter than titanium which allows the counterbalance to work more efficiently to make a bigger balancing impact.

Why is the Hi-Tec-C so popular?

The Hi-Tec-C so loved because of two innovations.
The ball. A three-point mounting system supports the carbide ball. Three dimples around the tip of the pipe allow the ball to rotate in a natural, frictionless manner. This allows for the highly precise lines that the Pilot Hi-Tec-C is known for.
The ink. No matter how small the pen tip is, it is impossible to write fine lines if the ink bleeds. The Hi-Tec-C uses a special "biopolymer ink" that uses resin made from microbes, such as yeast. This allows the ink to flow smoothly and cleanly from the tip, and prevents the ink from bleeding on the page.
The CB + P is compatible with the Fisher Space Pen pressurized ink refill.
Risks and challenges
I have successfully delivered a couple of other projects, including the Adjust-O-Weight pen, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/179537728/adjust-o-weight-custom-balance-pen .
The CB + P pen and the Pencil Companion will be made in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which eliminates the issue of dealing with an out of town machine shops and shipping logistics.
Production costs and allowances have already been established.
My machinists experience gives me unique insight to production considerations, e.g. how to design the pen and time effective production.
The aluminum and brass materials used in the pen have good availability and are not subject to extreme pricing spikes or shortages.
