Master Your 3D Pen! Tips, Techniques, and Inspiration
"Master Your 3D Pen: Tips, Techniques, and Inspiration for 3D Designs" – the first book dedicated to helping you use a 3D-printing pen!
A big sorry!
31 October 2014: We are really sorry to say that we have had to make the very hard decision to cancel this project. After monitoring the backing so far and investigating further into how many people currently own 3d pens, we feel the 3d pen industry needs to grow before there is a healthy market for people that need this book. We feel that the book is slightly ahead of its time as the 3d-printing pen industry is one that is still expanding – there are new pens due out next year which we are very excited about.
We’ll continue testing the pens and coming up with new project ideas; we hope that we can come back to this book and launch it when the 3d pen industry has grown. We’d like to thank you massively for your support of this project so far and for believing in us! We really hope to be able to bring this book to you in the future!
With the world's latest affordable 3D-printing technology, 3D pens, you can now create solid drawings and craft impressive sculptures. But how do you make the most out of this fabulous new art tool?
You've received your pen but you're not sure what to do next; you’re wondering, “What exactly can I make?” And more than that: “How do I hold this thing?” Master Your 3D Pen will answer these questions for you – and more!
The 3D-printing pen is the newest tool out there for creating 3D drawings, impressive art, jewellery, sculptures, and a variety of homeware. This book will therefore be an irresistible primer for:
- traditional and digital artists looking to express their creativity on a new level;
- children and parents looking for clean and easy creative projects to enjoy;
- hobbyists looking to acquire useful tips, tricks, and working practices to make the most out of their 3D-printing pens.
After carefully considering how the book will be used, we've opted for a landscape orientation to ensure all chapters and project breakdowns are presented in a clear and easy-to-follow way. The book will contain 200 pages of invaluable information, amazing photos, and tempting templates to make sure your 3D-printing pen experience is complete; we will be using glossy art paper of 115gsm so the photos will be high quality, enabling you to look closely at the methods involved and perfect your technique.
The paperback cover will be 300gsm CIS artboard with an attractive matt lamination and 100mm flaps, which means you'll be able to easily flick through the pages and projects to your heart's content. All in all, we believe this will be a beautiful and practical book to accompany you through your artistic journey!
- a pair of scissors to help you snip away any untidy ends;
- two sculpting tools, particularly useful for scraping plastic away from surfaces - for example when you are using templates as a guide;
- a metal ruler to make sure you can measure without worrying about potential melting issues!
Master Your 3D Pen will feature 24 projects for you to sink your 3D-printing teeth into as top artists work through how they used a 3D pen to create their art pieces. These will range from 3D sculpts of animals, plants, and vehicles to unique jewellery, homeware, and even shadow puppets!
Our aim is to produce a versatile book that is suitable for all pen types. Working through the projects, you will gradually build up skills and confidence for working with your new art tool. Simply creating a straight line can pose numerous problems! But the initial preparatory chapter will hold your hand through every straight line, curve, and wobble.
Each project will include step-by-step break-downs and troubleshooting tips that you can follow to improve your techniques. The book will also divulge best practices for drawing with a 3D-printing pen and setting up your work area, including looking at other tools that you could use to expand your skill set. We will also supply some instructional videos as free downloadable resources to enhance your 3D-printing pen educational journey.
Once you feel confident about tackling your first project you can then move on to using an array of 2D templates that will be included in the book; the idea behind this is not simply to show you the act of using templates, but also to demonstrate how you can convert your ideas into a template that works, using panels that will fit together to create your 3D object. From the templates you'll also learn about using scale correctly, and the principles behind welding to form those 3D objects.
Sometimes you'll need support – and we'll focus on that, too, looking at various everyday objects that can be used to create structure for your 3D object, before moving on to working freehand in 3D. In addition, the book will show you various techniques you can use for building up your work to create strength – from adding layers to using grids for support.
Did you consider mixing colours? Or even using other materials? Well – this book will also explain these advanced techniques and teach you all you need to know before you begin creating your 3D projects.
Overall, Master Your 3D Pen will present an array of thrilling projects for you to choose from. Whatever your fancy, there will be something there for you, giving you the foundation you need to spread your 3D-printed wings and fly!

If you have seen any of our previous Kickstarters, you will know that we revel in coming up with new resources and tools to help and inspire creative people around the world. We came across some of the new 3D-printing pens on Kickstarter ourselves, and instantly knew that this was the ideal platform on which develop a new title to help you all take advantage of this innovative technology!
3dtotal Publishing is the maker of a library of successful educational books for digital artists, spanning a variety of subjects from digital painting for beginners to sculpting in ZBrush. And behind 3dtotal Publishing is the 3dtotal.com website, which has been around for the last 14 years to offer artists and hobbyists helpful free tutorials and insightful articles to aid them with their digital art triumphs.
We have already launched five successful Kickstarter projects, including the Prime Wars card game, male and female anatomy figures for artists, the e338: The Art of Loic Zimmermann art book, and the highly popular Sketch Workshop. Prime Wars, the male anatomy figure, e338 and the Sketch Workshop projects have all been fulfilled with very happy backers and we have almost finished delivering the female anatomy figure project. The 3DTotal games expert has also developed a board game called 404: Law Not Found.
A big thanks to 3dtotal's Az Pishneshin for his brilliant photography and camera work, to Jake Gabb for the soundtrack, and to the incredible artists who have supported the project so far and for submitting their awesome designs.
We'd also like to pass on a huge thanks to Daniel Cowen, Co-Founder of 3Doodler for all the advice and support 3Doodler has offered for this project.
Risks and challenges
The challenge is to create a new book for a new technology – which means a fair bit of testing of the 3D pens and trying to get artists to sample these. Fortunately, we have already received two project overviews, which we think are fantastic! One of the featured artists and our beloved new junior editor, Marisa, has also spent many hours doodling away to make sure we cover all bases in training you to use these tools.
As always with books, the challenge is to get everything written, edited, proofed, designed and printed on time. We are in the process of finalising the artist line up and are pretty well practised in the hiccups and panic moments that come up during book production, so we will be doing our utmost to ensure your rewards are delivered on time.
In terms of our add-on option, we are talking to various manufacturers about materials for our pen case, and tweaking the design to suit, so it is still a work in progress. We are working hard to ensure the production of the pen cases ties in perfectly with the book production schedule, but if any problems arise in timings/production of the pen case, we will post an update to keep you in the loop.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
