About this project
BIG THANKS to all who have pledged and shouted about this project throughout the last month to help us reach such incredible numbers! We're thrilled to now be able to buckle down and get stuck into all the serious work to deliver this project to you awesome people. Thank you :)
It's not too late...
If you've come across this page after the campaign has ended and you're interested in getting a female anatomical reference figure, or perhaps just want to find out how things are going, drop by the 3dtotal website or our Facebook Page for updates. You can also sign up to our twice-monthly newsletter for all the latest news from the team. Or if you prefer to speak to one of our team in person, drop Melanie an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and she'll add you to a list of people to contact when the statue is on sale. We will be delivering all backers before the statue is released through the 3dtotal shop later this year. The male statue is available now!
Since the launch of our first male anatomical reference figure on Kickstarter in 2013, development on our second figure has been underway! The female anatomical reference figure will become the second model to grace artists' desks and workspaces around the world, giving everyone a chance to develop their anatomy skills without a hefty price tag.
Whether you're a traditional or digital artist, work in 2D or 3D, or simply like to fill your desk with nice things, the female anatomical figure will be an invaluable addition to your world.
Sculpted by Dan Crossland for 3dtotal, the female figure is produced to the same standards as the original male statue, and also to scale. We calculated that our female would be around 5% shorter than our male in the real world, making her 265mm tall, minus the base (our male is 297mm, minus the base). Cast in the same neutral grey resin, together the models will make fantastic desktop companions!
"Knowing how expensive most anatomy reference models are, I'm very pleased 3dtotal went through the effort to bring this educational resource at such a democratic price-point... I'm so glad I was able to get one of the first run of this model." - male anatomical reference figure Kickstarter backer, 2013
"Absolutely fantastic reference figure; the detail is extraordinary for the low price point and the build quality is superb. I've recommended this to a few artist friends already and will continue to do so. It's so much easier to understand form and muscle structure when you can physically hold something rather than just looking at flat 2D images." - male anatomical reference figure customer, 2013
To say a huge THANKS and to push the project even further still, we have come up with a few exciting stretch goals for everyone:
Each 1-hour video will be narrated and focused on a key part of female human anatomy. The tutorials will be demonstrated in ZBrush software, but Dan will discuss the anatomical details as he sculpts, so that those who aren't 3D artists and more interested in the anatomy side than the sculpting side can take away some great information, too.
As with our first Kickstarter project there is plenty to excite and entice, including male and female bundles, books, sketchbooks and drawing tools. Be sure to check out all of the different options on the right to find the one that best suits you! If you would like extra statues to add to your bundles, please send us a message so we can advise on how much to add to your pledge to cover the extra costs.

The female anatomical reference figure has been sculpted for us by Dan Crossland, printed using a high-res 3D printer at Ownage, and then moulded and cast in grey resin in the USA to make the variation in the surfaces and directional flow of the muscles easy to see and understand. One half of the model shows full skin, while the other is a clear and detailed dissection revealing muscle structure.
- Cast in neutral grey resin
- 26.5cm tall (minus the base)
- Weight approx 340 grams
- Side-by-side comparison: full skin/muscle flow
- Sculpted by Dan Crossland
"This figure is so great, I love it. It's very well detailed and accurate. Quick to refer to when in doubt, great for studies (rendering, values, lighting tests, anatomy study...) And it's a beautiful ornament on an artist's desk, I must admit :D" - male anatomical reference figure customer, 2013
Our pledge options have been created with everyone in mind! We are offering free shipping to the UK, EU and USA backers. Rest of world backers have pledge options that include shipping costs. We will ship everywhere. We also plan to send US backers their models directly from our casting company in the States, so you'll be among the first to get your statues. Unfortunately we can't send to Canada from the States (sorry!).
What if I want to track my parcel?
If you would like to request a tracked service, please message us and we will get a quote for you - you can then add the extra shipping costs to your pledge.
What if my parcel gets lost?
In the event of lost orders in the mail (it happens!), we will offer to resend the order once for free, or alternatively you will have the option of a refund. Please note that we can only reship an order once if it is lost. If the second parcel is lost, we will not be able to offer a refund.
Since the first day that we launched our male anatomical reference figure, we received many requests from Kickstarter backers for a female version. So we thought it was perfect timing to bring you a female reference figure one year after we successfully funded our male.
We hope you'll all love our female figure as much as you did our original male!
We are aiming to deliver all statues and rewards in August 2014. And we have great confidence that we can achieve this. Let us explain why...
It's safe to say that we learned a lot in the production of our first anatomical male reference figure. Those of you that backed our male statue may remember that we decided to improve the design of our model to improve proportions and details, which unfortunately caused us a substantial delay (thanks to all our male figure backers - you were very patient with us!). Since this was also our first-ever project using 3D printing and resin casting, we had to go through a fair bit of extra back and forth to get the results that we wanted to achieve for you. And we learned so much!
The great news is that with all of this priceless experience under our belts, we are now very confident that we can meet our schedule on time with our female figure! Our female model is anatomically correct (we have already had her reviewed by several professional artists!) and we are not anticipating any design changes this time. We also have a smooth production line in process now, so our schedule has been calculated very accurately.
As our statues are cast by hand in small quantities, we should point out that this does mean that very high quantities of statues can take longer to make. So in the event that our backers reach very high numbers then we may see a slight delay on the production, packaging and shipping times, but we will be acting fast to gauge backer numbers and keep our casting company up to date so they know what to expect when the project (hopefully!) funds. This should help us avoid any big delays and keep you all happy backers.
3dtotal Publishing is the maker of a library of successful educational books for digital artists, spanning a variety of subjects from digital painting to beginners to sculpting in ZBrush. And behind 3dtotal Publishing is the 3dtotal.com website, which has been around for the last 14 years to offer artists and hobbyists helpful free tutorials and insightful articles to aid them with their digital art triumphs.
Why should you trust us? We have already launched 5 successful Kickstarter projects, including the Prime Wars card game, our male anatomy figure for artists (obviously!), a board game called '404: Law Not Found', a stunning art book titled 'e338: The Art of Loic Zimmermann', and our popular Sketch Workshop project. Prime Wars and the male anatomy figure projects have both been fulfilled with very happy backers. 404: Law Not Found, e338: The Art of Loic Zimmermann, and the Sketch Workshop are all currently in production and due to be shipped to backers. e338 will be going out in a matter of weeks!
Risks and challenges
The awesome news is that we already know a good thing or two about 3D printing and resin casting, so we have no worries about our abilities when it comes to the creation of a female anatomical reference figure.
The obvious challenges with a project like this come down to the production and shipping times, as our statues are cast by hand in the US, which means very high backer numbers may mean production takes a little longer than we anticipate. We are also a small team over here in the UK (there are just 12 of us!) and we package all our orders at our studio (except for you lucky US backers - you'll get yours first, direct from our casting company in the States!), so again: with very high backers numbers it may take us a little longer to package and post everything. But hopefully not too long.
We'll be sure to post regular updates to keep everyone in the loop!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
