It's not too late...
22 Dec 2014: If you've come across this page after the campaign has ended and you're interested in getting one or more of the anatomy figures, or perhaps just want to find out how things are going, drop by the 3dtotal website or our Facebook Page for updates. You can also sign up to our twice-monthly newsletter for all the latest news from the team. Or if you prefer to speak to one of our team in person, please drop Melanie an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and she'll add you to a list of people to contact when these new statues go on sale. We will be delivering to all backers before the statues are released through the 3dtotal shop next year. The original half-skin/half écorché male and female figures are in our shop now!
HUGE UPDATE: New Female Planar version!
9 Dec 2014: A lot of backers have been asking us about a female planar version - so we've hurried up our prototype-making of this little lady to bring her to you... NOW!
The Female Planar statue is the same height (265mm minus the base) as our original female half-skin, half-écorché. She'll make a great buddy for the male planar statue, or to accompany the original female half-and-half. For those that want the full set of male and female references, we salute you!
Once again sculpted by our anatomy expert, Dan Crossland, the female planar is perfect for visualising the body in its simplest forms - and wonderful for light and shading studies, too! It will also greatly help artists looking for better understanding of the shapes and volumes that build up the female figure.
If you've already backed and want to add the Female Planar to your pledge, simply increase your pledge amount to match the quantity of statues you'd like. You'll tell us exactly which ones you want in the backer survey at the end of the project.
NOTE: We can't edit the pledge options on the page as they have all been backed, however please rest assured that you can select the Female Planar if backing ANY of the 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 pledge options. You'll choose which versions you want in the backer survey at the end of the project.
We've added a new tier option for those that want all 6 new statues! Don't forget you can add £60 each for the original male and female half-skin, half- écorché statues, too. :)
Introducing a new series of anatomical reference figures for artists, offering the male anatomy in a full planar model - designed by popular demand! - plus new full nude and full écorché versions. We also reveal how to create convincing biosuits for male characters that fit the human anatomy perfectly!
Since the launch of our female anatomical reference figure, we've been working hard on new and exciting models to expand our ever-growing range of statues. We've run surveys of our ideas, showcased prototypes of early models at SIGGRAPH 2014, and finally settled on the incredible new set of statues you'll see on this page:
- Planar Male and Female
- Full Nude
- Full Écorché
- Full Biosuit
- Half-and-Half Biosuit
We hope you like them!
We have been overwhelmed by requests for 3D planar versions of our statues and, after showcasing an early male planar version designed by our anatomy guru Dan Crossland at SIGGRAPH 2014, we realised this had to be one of our next releases!
The planar version is perfect for artists looking to visualise the human body in its simplest forms, and is great for light and shading studies, as well as for 3D artists looking for better understanding of the shapes and volumes that build up the body.
By popular demand, we have also added a Female Planar to the project! (9 December, 2014).
The grey resin is chosen specifically to provide the best tone for showing shadows and detail when under different light sources, and we allow our statues to cure for a little longer than normal to reduce any unwanted shininess. We've learned a lot from experience!
We also wanted to bring you full nude and full écorché versions of the statues because, sometimes, it just helps to be able to see the full body from all angles with complete skin, or to study all the underlying muscles.
Once again sculpted by the amazing Dan Crossland, you can get either or both of these versions with this Kickstarter project!
When we had the first-ever casts of our male anatomical reference figure arrive at 3dtotal HQ, we often joked about dressing our anatomy figures up - having competitions for the silliest hat, or the most ridiculous pants! And then one day it hit us: we should totally get an awesome artist to create a biosuit for our macho male! So we called upon our good friend Alessandro Baldasseroni, of Blur Studio fame, to concept and sculpt an epic biosuit. And here it is!
The goal with the Biosuit version is to reveal how to create convincing armour that fits the human anatomy perfectly. So often we see character submissions to the 3dtotal galleries that simply wouldn't be able to move if the concept existed in the real world. So Alessandro's task was to create a biosuit design that shows exactly how it fits the male form, while still allowing the wearer to fight like a champ.
The half-and-half version gives you a clear view of how the anatomy works with the suit, and will give you a solid understanding of how to build your own effective biosuit and armour designs. While we have designed just one biosuit, the possibilities of what you can create are endless! The important thing is to realise how to design for the human form.
We couldn't resist making a full biosuit statue as well, as the detail that Alessandro has gone into is really incredible! This version is a chunky fella and is therefore a little heavier than our other models due to the extra weight he's carrying in his resin suit.
We want these new statues to fit into the family of anatomical figures we've already created, so they are once again 11 inches tall (27.5cm) minus the base, which makes them an ideal size to see the details of the human anatomy while still keeping them affordable. At this size, they are your perfect desktop companions! The female planar is created to scale, so she is 26.5cm tall, so her proportions are in keeping with the male versions.
First, our master models are printed using a high-res 3D printer at Ownage, and then moulded and cast in grey resin to make the variation in the surfaces and directional flow of the muscles - and the awesome biosuit - easy to see and understand. Here are some facts:
Each statue is cast in neutral grey resin
Each statue is 27.5cm tall*, minus the base (the biosuit version is slightly taller, due to his helmet!) *The female is to scale, and so is 26.5cm tall
Each statue weighs approx 340 grams* (the biosuit will be heavier due to more material used!) *The female planar will be slightly lighter
The planars, full nude, full écorché, and half-skin, half-écorché statues are all sculpted by Dan Crossland
The full Biosuit and Biosuit half-and-half statues are both sculpted by Alessandro Baldasseroni
What's more: We are using a new system for these 6 new statues to increase quality and reduce the seams down the sides, too!
Having created a bunch of Kickstarter projects in the past, we've learned that too many options can be overwhelming. So we're keeping things simple! Simply choose to back 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 statues to the right, and we'll ship to the UK and USA for free - for the rest of the world it's just £6 per figure! You'll be able to select the exact versions you want in the backer survey once the project is funded. You'll be able to choose any combination of the following:
- Female Planar
Male Full Nude
Male Full Écorché
If you'd like to get one of our existing male and/or female half-skin, half-écorché figures, simply add £60 for each to your pledge. We'll ship these ones for free!
Male half-skin, half-écorché - add £60
Female half-skin, half-écorché* - add £60
*Please note: the female model is 5% shorter, to keep her in proportion to the male!
We will ship everywhere. Our pledge options have been created with everyone in mind! And we are offering free shipping to the USA and UK! For the rest of the world, the shipping cost is only £6 per figure.
What if I want to track my parcel?
All backers will receive a tracking number for their parcels, once shipped. This time, we are having the 5 statues shipped from our casting company in China. If you are ordering add-on statues, these will be shipped (for free!) from the 3dtotal HQ and will be sent by standard mail. If you would like to request a tracked service for these ones, please message us and we will get a quote for you - you can then add the extra shipping costs to your pledge. You can also email email@example.com for tracked shipping quotes.
What if my parcel gets lost?
As all parcels from China are tracked, we hope lost orders in the mail to be a minimum. In the event that a parcel does get lost, we will offer to resend the order once for free, or alternatively you will have the option of a refund. Please note that we can only reship an order once if it is lost. If the second parcel is lost, we will not be able to offer a refund. If you are worried about the postal service in your country or have experienced lost mail before, please send us a message for advice, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our male anatomical reference figure and female anatomical reference figure gathered many fans on Kickstarter, and we still keep in touch with everyone here. So it's really the perfect place to launch more statue ideas for the ever-growing range - and allow our Kickstarter friends to tell us what they think, and get them first! We couldn't have got this far without you all, so we hope you'll like these latest additions to the family.
We are aiming to start delivering all statues and rewards in March 2015. It's difficult to give an end date for the shipping, as this is dependent upon the number of backers, but we will endeavour to ship rewards to those who pledged the highest amounts first, as a special thanks for being so awesome.
In terms of the production of these statues, we have great confidence that we can achieve results you'll be pleased with. Let us explain why...
It's safe to say that we learned a lot in the production of our first anatomical male and female reference figures. Those of you that backed our male statue may remember that we decided to improve the design of our model to improve proportions and details, which unfortunately caused us a substantial delay (thanks to all our male figure backers - you were very patient with us!). Since this was also our first-ever project using 3D printing and resin casting, we had to go through a fair bit of extra back and forth to get the results that we wanted to achieve for you. And we learned so much!
The great news is that with all of this priceless experience under our belts, we managed to keep everything on schedule with our female figure, which luckily didn't need any design changes second time around. So we are now very happy to have a smooth production line in process, meaning our schedule can be calculated much more accurately than our first days out in the anatomy figure world!
As our statues are cast by hand in small quantities, we do need to point out that this does mean that very high quantities of statues can and will take longer to make. So in the event that our backers reach very high numbers then we may see a delay on the production, packaging and shipping times, but we will be acting fast to gauge backer numbers as early as possible, and keep our casting company up to date so they know what to expect when the project (hopefully!) funds. This should help us avoid any big delays and keep you all happy backers.

Prime Wars, the male anatomy figure, e338: The Art of Loic Zimmermann, Sketch Workshop, and most recently the female anatomical reference figure projects have all been fulfilled with very happy backers. 404: Law Not Found is currently in production and due to be shipped to backers very soon!
Risks and challenges
The awesome news is that we already know a good thing or two about 3D printing and resin casting, so we have no worries about our abilities when it comes to the creation of anatomical reference figures.
The obvious challenges with a project like this come down to the production and shipping times, as our statues are cast by hand, which means very high backer numbers may mean production takes a little longer than we anticipate. We are also a small team over here in the UK (there are just 12 of us!) and we will be packaging all our add-on orders at our studio, so again: with very high backers numbers it may take us a little longer to package and post everything. But hopefully not too long.
We'll be sure to post regular updates to keep everyone in the loop!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
