The Fate Core Character Journal is modeled after some of my favorite gaming accessories from the early 2000s; specifically the D&D 3rd Edition Character Folio and the Big Eyes, Small Mouth Character Diary.
They were intended to get you thinking about your character not just as a collection of numbers on a page, but to set goals, ponder their outlooks, and show how they grow over the course of The Epic Campaign(TM). The Fate Character Journal is designed to capture that feel. It walks you through character generation in the steps laid out in the Fate Core rule book, with expanded sections that focus on what is usually glossed over. Specifically aspects and stunts.
We all know that your Sharp-Tongued Sweet Talker can be invoked when laying on the charm, but how can it be compelled against you? It's easy to figure out when to compel the Reek of Death trouble aspect, but when can it be useful? It might be common knowledge that you have the Master Duelist stunt, but what does it do, and how did you come about attaining it? The Fate Core Character Journal helps you fill in the gaps where the Phase Trio ends and your story begins!
Worksheet-Style Character Creation
What Makes Me Qualified to do This? Lots, really. Character folios/diaries/journals/etc have always been one of my favorite gaming accessory, and so I have used them extensively. Heck, I'm pretty sure I spent more money on BESM Character Diaries than I did on the sourcebooks! I've been gaming for 15 years or so, and played a lot of systems. I've used good character sheets, bad character sheets, and ignored those that were so bad I had to make my own.
This isn't just a fling or whim for me. I've invested time everyday doing something related to the Character Journal. From simply blogging about it, to getting my Amazon Payments account ready, to talking to my editor or artist.
I am a new publisher, yes, but I am also dedicated to making this the best character record keeper/note taker/doodle pad it can be. I want this to be beautiful, to sit right next to Fate Core in your FLGS and people pick them up together. I have goals, dreams, and the drive to achieve all I can.
Note that the physical books are being printed and shipped via DriveThruRPG, so there will be an additional printing and shipping charges from them. Shipping is around US$5 to US/CA, and around US$15 for shipping elsewhere.
Gaming stores, in addition to the physical books in your pledge, you will also receive retailer pricing for any subsequent reorder via DriveThruRPG.
Risks and challenges
There are two main challenges to the fullfillment of this project: art and printing.
All of the art is on comission pending the successful funding of the Journal. So the later we reach our goal, the later the artist will start working on the art. That can cause some delays. Also, since all the art is being done by one person, if something were to happen in her life, that will push back the release date as well.
Since I am using DriveThruRPG for printing and shipping of the physical products, there could be some issues with getting the Journal to the printer and appropriatly laid out. The Journal is in the hands of my editor right now, so once I have it back from him, I can start getting it prepared for print on demand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
