The Great Twin Cities Poetry Read is a celebration of community. It's what the poet Lucille Clifton calls "a gathering of the tribe."

Nobody knew if the first Great Twin Cities Poetry Read would be a hit or a flop. Held in a tiered classroom with the lights dimmed on the marsh-nestled suburban campus of Normandale Community College, home of the largest Associate of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program in the U.S. of A.—but a Herculean stone's throw from downtown Minnneapolis—the inaugural GTCPR was dedicated to the then-recently-deceased poet Lucille Clifton.  The celebration of community was the perfect way to honor to life and work of Clifton. On the promotional posters and in the hearts of all who read or attended was her call to gathering: "it is nice to find your, or actually, what happens is, your tribe finds you. and you are so happy." It felt a lot like the "We Are the World" recording session, so much so that the tune was even projected on the big board behind the poets assembled on the dais.

The second annual GTCPR became a fund-raising event for Dean Young, the widely influential American poet who, has had suffered an extended and costly battle with a degenerative heart condition that resulted in successful heart transplant surgery. His story and his need for assistance with mounting medical costs galvanized the American literary community.

GTCPR II was co-hosted by Young's friend, the poet Dobby Gibson. As Gibson says, "The outpouring of support for Dean was overwhelming. The little wicker basket I had placed on the table by the door overflowed with cash and checks. I don’t mean to be crass; I mean to be accurate. Very few people left that reading without giving and giving generously. We raised more than $1,000, not counting anyone who went online and donated from home.  This was, by the way, significantly more money than was raised at a heavily promoted New York City event, headlined by fancy poets in one of those places with chancellors and chandeliers. This Poetry City U.S.A. idea might not be entirely tongue in cheek after all."

POETRY CITY, USA is the annual anthology of poems read at the Great Twin Cities Poetry Read + essays, reviews, interviews, and other prose on poetry. Event founder/anthology editor Matt Mauch has been able to cajole 25 to 30 poets from Minnesota and neighboring states to read a single poem each at each GTCPR. Each GTCPR has presented a new line-up of poets, and Mauch is working to extend that streak as long as possible, including poets not only from the Midwest but from around the country.

With the third annual GTCPR on April 21, 2012, the event realizes it goal of become a movable feast, relocating from the Normandale venue to Hamline University in St. Paul, home of the Water~Stone Review.

Your support for the what is essentially a one-person operation brought to life in the spare time found outside of a full-time job will be used to ensure the continued existence of evolution of GTCPR/Poetry City, USA  by funding (1) the creation, publication, marketing, and distribution of the Poetry City, USA anthology series, (2) the creation of posters, programs, a website, and promotional materials to advertise and support the GTCPRs, and (3) outreach programs comprising the Great Twin Cities Poetry Road Show.
