Who/What is SoapSkeptics?
SoapSkeptics is made up of two artists, Andrea Garcia and Rosie McNeill.
Andrea Garcia graduated in May 2014 from the School of Visual Arts with a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the Visual and Critical Studies Program. That is basically a fancy title for art history, critical theory, and studio art practices. Andrea focuses mostly on sculpture and fiber arts. Andrea is inspired to make fine art objects by using conventional craft techniques to create both functional and dysfunctional works using fibers, wood, clay, wire, and other materials. Feel free to check out her fine art site.
Rosie McNeill spent the last two years living in different parts of California and Colorado experiencing life and working all sorts of random jobs along the way . A little opposite from Andrea's ideas of creating, Rosie is geared towards things with function and meaning such as dream catchers, handbags, and jewelry. She is a really good teacher and fast producer of art things!
Serendipitously, both friends moved back to Metuchen, NJ after being away for two years and are looking for what to do next. Andrea and Rosie have decided to pursue their passions to create and educate! We want to travel America and document what CULTURE & ART mean to our people. Hopefully, we can continue on this adventure of meeting new people and spreading knowledge on culture and the arts around the globe.
What is SoapSkeptics trying to do??
We want to propose a project in which we travel from NJ to Seattle, WA (Aug 8- Sept 15, 2014) and the objective of this trip would be to interview local artists around America and ask them about their views on culture, traditions, what is art, and what role does art play (or not play) in their every day life, etc.
What is the point??
The main goal of this documentary is to show the differences and/or similarities in ways of living, culture, and art throughout North America. We are hoping to discover the ways in which our quickly evolving society/culture influences artists practice. With this documentary, we hope to encapsulate the ways in which art and culture exist in our society today, along with engaging in meaningful human to human interaction.
We have begun the process of making short documentaries that serve as a preview for what the documentary will look like. Here is an example below:
This project is not just about making a documentary:
Throughout our road trip we will be stopping in many different terrains that America provides us: desert, mountains, lakes, beaches, urban, and suburban. We want to make a weaving out of natural recourses we find in each city/state. For example: we will be in Florida and we will make a weaving out of palm leaves. This weaving will be titled "Florida". We will go to Tennessee and make a weaving out of corn husk and hay we will title that weaving "Tennessee". We will also have our own sketchbooks which we will constantly draw and write in. In the end, the weavings and sketches will be made into a book. This Book will be our own visual representation of our journey throughout North America. This part of the project is to really show how we perceive culture and art; how we can use craft techniques to make something symbolic of our journey together.
Plane Ticket from Seattle back to NJ= $1,000 for the two of us
(These are all estimations give or take)
We do plan to sell the car, but the money we make from the car will be going towards making the DVD's, printing photographs, and making the Book of Weavings!
THATS A TOTAL OF $10,000!!!!
But we are only pledging $5,000 because we are determined to make this happen no matter what and if we can raise half, we will earn the rest while working this spring/summer.

Risks and challenges
-We might run out of money while we're on the road
-We might have car troubles
-We might find ourselves in a sticky situation with some negative folks (don't worry, we have pepper spray...)
-We might get lost!
-We might take longer than expected to actually edit all of our footage into a movie
-We might get really sick of each other and want to jump out of the moving vehicle!
But, honestly, our hearts and souls are in this more than anything else right now. We spend night after night crocheting, weaving, spinning yarn, and thinking of new ideas to make things with our hands. It's an addiction, to make things with our hands. Why would we put this beautiful gift away to work in an office just to pay some bills?
Whatever struggles we go through, we have a strong support system back at home who we know will always rescue us if it is really necessary. But we believe in ourselves, and we know we have others who believe in us as well. It's just a matter of spreading the word for some strangers to believe in us too!
