I am so excited to get back into the studio this summer to record a 5-song EP, my first recording project since "Circles" in 2010! Read more

About this project
My name is Dan Strauss and I am a singer/songwriter living in Brooklyn, NY. I have been playing music and writing songs as long as I can remember and have independently released three albums over the past ten years, the most recent being "Circles" in 2010. Since then, I have been writing new songs and performing all around the Northeast. These new songs have been recorded as home demos, patiently waiting until the time felt right to get back into the studio. Everything has aligned for now to be that time.
These songs explore different musical genres including country, folk and rock. Growing up on steady doses of The Beatles, Springsteen, Bowie and Costello, my songwriting always, at its core, expresses a love of melody, harmony, strong lyrics and experimentation. Most recently, my writing has been influenced by the indie rock/folk sounds of artists like Feist and Beck and at the same time, traditional American music. This summer, I will be heading up to the Catskills to record several of these new tunes. I've always been enchanted by this beautiful region of New York State, whether because of the stories of Washington Irving or the charmed era of Dylan and The Band making music at Big Pink. Whenever I'm in the Catskills, music and creativity just flows. I will be joined by some fabulous local musicians and will record in a small, intimate studio nestled in the hills.
The new songs will be part of a larger relaunch of the best of the previous releases. You can hear some of these demos and other songs on Reverbantion This sampler will get brand new packaging and will be part of a huge promotional campaign that will include a great new website. I cannot wait to get started!!
That brings us to why I'm joining with Kickstarter and how you can help. A lack of capital has been the primary barrier to getting back into the studio to get this project started. These days, a fellow like me, unsigned and unrepresented, can make a CD in a professional recording studio. This is great because recording music is no longer only available to a select few who are backed by a big label. However, the price tag can be staggering. Studio and engineer fees are the biggest cost. When everything is recorded and mixed (which can take weeks or months), there is the mastering of the project. This has a hefty price tag as well. There are musicians to pay, artwork to create, CDs to duplicate, mailings and other promotional tools to pay for. It all adds up pretty fast.
With your help, this project can happen! Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated. And what is so great about this, is that you really become part of the process. We become a team. Plus, you get neat stuff for being involved. When all is said and done (no ifs, we will make this happen together!!), the final product will be all the more satisfying because it was created collaboratively with you. This campaign will last 30 days. If we don't reach our goal, it doesn't happen. We can do it!
Thank you so, so much!
Risks and challenges
I don't foresee any major setbacks. I have mapped out a plan for this project and have brought together some great, talented people to help me get to the end. We are giving ourselves the entire summer to work on it so that the process can breathe. I have learned a great deal recording the previous albums and I know glitches and complications can arise. I also know they can be overcome through good planning, flexibility and focus. Whatever issues may arise, we will consider them thoroughly and move forward.
The biggest challenge awaits when the project is completed and it is time to promote the work and get it out there. This has been the biggest challenge for me with the first three records and this time, I intend to work with professional to help me do this right.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
