We at Fabrack love fresh food! Hoping to spread this appreciation, we aim to make you care about the food that so many of us buy, take for granted, and absentmindedly allow to go bad. By displaying your food with a sense of pride, food is neither lost nor constrained. Rather, it's brought to your attention to serve as a constant reminder to utilize the fresh food that you have.
In the United States where many are deprived the basic right to food, 40% of the food that is produced is left for waste. Representing $165 billion of discarded food each year and the single largest component of municipal solid waste reaching landfills and incinerators, such food waste creates significant ethical, economical, and environmental consequences.
Fabrack began as our studio project while industrial design students at Virginia Tech. The more we told the story about food waste, and how simply it could be prevented, the more it struck a chord with everyone. This had us come to the realization that our project could be turned into a real product for everyone to use.
Think about it? How many times have you gone into your refrigerator to find food that you didn’t even remember were there only to find out it has gone bad. Or you’ve looked into your refrigerator drawer just to find your recent purchases from the store have started rotting because they were shoved into a drawer, on top of each other, unable to breathe.
If each of us wasted just 5 percent less food each month, the weight of two apples, it would be enough to feed 4 million people! And that’s where Fabrack comes in. We want to make it easier to not only save two apples, but all your produce!
In the beginning, we experimented with initial prototypes to see how we could make use of the wasted space under shelves. We started out by draping fabric around the shelf to create sling like pockets. It was a good start, but we wanted to come up with a way to give the fabric more structure and create individual pockets. So we headed to the sewing lab and came up with a geometric diamond pattern. This gave us what we were looking for and allowed the structure to collapse flat. We then had the task of coming up with a hanging system that would accommodate all the different refrigerator shelf varieties in everyone's home. All that was left was finalizing sizing, choosing a pocket layout, and picking the right materials.
Fabrack is an expandable, hanging storage solution for the refrigerator, that prevents food from being crushed or forgotten. Instead, it brings food to the forefront of both our refrigerators and our minds. Think of it as closet organizational storage for your refrigerator. Food is put on display in immediate eye’s view. We feel this will make you able to remember more easily what you have, allowing you to use up the food before it even has a chance to lose its freshness and ultimately, go bad. Our hope through Fabrack is to encourage the full consumption of food through a means of organization, presentation and preservation.
Fabrack is made out of a poly/cotton twill. The blend is versatile. It retains the coolness and breathability of cotton, while having the strength, durability of polyester. The blend also allows Fabrack to be stain and water resistant minimizing staining and mildew. This material can withstand many washes and still look good, and who doesn’t love that?
There are 5 small pockets. They are a perfect size for a majority of the fruits and veggies you eat, like apples, oranges, bundles of carrots or celery, onions, peppers and maybe even that bottle of wine you’re gonna have with dinner.
There’s also 1 large open sling pocket. We added this to accommodate larger items like heads of lettuce, grapefruit, eggplant, etc.
Reaching our funding goal of $15,000 will enable us to continue work refining the final details of our design and get Fabrack into production and consequently, your refrigerator. This initial funding will cover the material and manufacturing expenses for production as well as packaging and shipping to get the first Fabracks we make into your hands.
Through a product that encourages consumers to preserve and utilize the fresh food available in their own refrigerator, we seek to promote healthier, more sustainable lifestyles that reflect a global consciousness for the human right to food. Reducing food waste and preserving the fresh taste that we all deserve, Fabrack envisions a world without waste and looks forward to finding a place in consumers’ hearts and homes.
If you find yourself to be an individual, who cooks meals daily (often on a busy schedule), cherishes fresh and organic produce, depends on efficient organization to maximize space, and perhaps, prefers to offer a “stocked refrigerator” for guests, then Fabrack is for you!

LOCALDESIGN AND FABRACK COLLABORATIONLocalDesign is made up of current Industrial Design students at Virginia Tech. They run a student operated vendor at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market that produces custom hand crafted wooden kitchen tools. By selling locally produced tools, they are able to involve and educate the community about the design process. We are working with LocalDesign to design and produce great locally made rewards just for you.
End of June :: Funding successful!
Early July :: Meet with our manufacturers to finalize design : begin ordering materials
Mid July :: Start production
Early August :: First round is shipped, and first ever Fabracks begin to reach your homes!
These dates are what we are aiming for, but since this is our first run of manufacturing, we may hit bumps in the road along the way. This could cause unforeseen delays, pushing our dates. We ensure you that we will be honest and timely about any changes that happen along the way.
In the pictures, what you see is our final prototype. There is still some design refinement to be done, but Fabrack‘s overall design will stay the same. We will only make small design changes to improve Fabrack and make it the best it can be when we send it out to you!
We are Lauren and Jeff. This past spring we graduated from the Industrial Design program at Virginia Tech. Fabrack started out as an individual studio project, then was later revisited as a group project in a Professional Practice class. Initially, it was all a hypothetical business plan, but once the class ended we thought to ourselves if not now, then when. When would we have the time and energy to try designing a fantastic product and building a business from scratch? Why not try to turn all our hard work in school from something just in our portfolios into a real consumer product. We have the rest of our lives to get big company jobs. So here we are, on Kickstarter, going for it. We are proud of the product we have come up with and hope you love it as much as we do. We look forward to having all of you join us on this rewarding ride!
Over the past year we have iterated, prototyped and started all over again trying to come up with what we feel is the best product to give to our fellow consumers. We have an almost finalized design, but there are still a few design refinements we will make along the way to ensure the final product is the best it can be.
As with any manufactured item there is the possibility that we may hit a few bumps in the road along the way. If time does get away from us, we assure you that our backers will be the first to know. We promise to send updates along the way and let you, our backers, know if any hiccups come up that have a major impact on the product you are receiving or delay it anyway.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
