Who is STM:
STM Instruments Inc was founded by 4 friends/engineers with more than 60 combined years of fluid sensor design experience. Throughout our careers we have more than 35 issued patents and an additional 20 filed patents. We're not bragging, we just know fluid sensors and are passionate about what we do.
The eDrometer was conceived when one of the founders got involved with brewing and distilling. After struggling with getting accurate and repeatable results using a floating hydrometer he soon realized he could build a better more accurate digital hydrometer. Enlisting his friends help they went to work, and 18 months later the eDrometer was born.
The eDrometer is not only easy to use, it also has superb accuracy, better than 0.0015 SG; assuring consistent accurate results time after time.
The eDrometer was designed from the ground up to work as a Brewer, Wine Maker or Distiller would want it to work. From filling, to cleaning, to getting results, the eDrometer is easy, fast and accurate. Another feature of the eDrometer is what we call CTC technology (Complete Temperature Compensation). CTC technology eliminates the need to perform post measurement temperature correction; the value displayed IS the temperature corrected value.
Not only is the eDrometer accurate, it is also extremely durable. The sensing portion of the eDrometer is constructed of stainless steel allowing it to stand up to the rigors of everyday use.
In the past if you wanted a digital hydrometer you had to spend thousands of dollars for a complicated device. With the eDrometer, you get all of the great features, accuracy, repeatability and durability at a price that is 4 to 5x less than similar performing digital hydrometers on the market today.
What is a hydrometer?
Hydrometers are extensively used in brewing, winemaking and distilling. The floating hydrometer is the most popular type used today. Floating hydrometers are relatively inexpensive but have several drawbacks, including being difficult to use, inaccurate and fragile. On the other end of the spectrum is the significantly more expensive digital hydrometer. Digital hydrometers have existed for years, but are mainly used in laboratories and large scale breweries, wineries and distilleries. These devices are accurate, but range in price from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, these devices can be finicky and difficult to use.
One of the key measurements obtained with a hydrometer during alcohol production is sugar concentration; this is an important measurement because, basically, sugar is the food for the yeast. By knowing the amount of sugar, the craftsman can control the alcohol content and flavor of the beverage being produced. This value is measured at different points throughout the process to ensure a repeatable, quality product every time.
Because the eDrometer is so fast and easy to use the craftsman can easily take measurements before, during and after fermentation, allowing them to consistently dial in their recipe.

As with any new start up there is risk, for STM the primary risks are;
We have manufactured 9 prototype versions over the last 18 months, each time refining the product capabilities and assuring it is designed for ease of manufacturing. We have focused on designing and optimizing our production tooling and fixturing to ensure a precise, accurate instrument is produced every time off the production line. With our extensive product design experience we know how important production tooling is and that it needs to perform flawlessly thousands of times while maintaining design precision, and we intend to do whatever it takes to get it right the first time.
Now that it is time for selling to the marketplace we need to assure a smooth transition from Alpha build into full production mode. We have extensive experience with this phase of a project and have taken the essential steps to guarantee it goes smoothly. We have identified capable suppliers and part manufacturers needed to produce a world class product. We also have an extensive list of experts to call upon to make sure production runs flawlessly.
We are still refining the details of integrating our online store with order filling, parts inventory, billing and shipping. There are many great business software packages out there to deal with this and we will be utilizing experts to assist in getting this set up and running correctly.
Is the eDrometer able to calculate percentage alcohol on finished beer without knowing original gravity?
With the eDrometer and beer you still need to know the original and final SG to determine alcohol content since the SG of your beer is related to the other contents of your beer in addition to the water and alcohol. Instead you would want to use the potential alcohol of the beer before fermentation and after to determine the alcohol content of your finished beer.
It will have no problems looking at the specific gravity of salt water, as this is a vibrating element hydrometer made from stainless steel.
After you are done with the sample fluid you need to flush and blow out the tubes to prevent residue from being left behind by the sample fluids. Since the sensing element is made from Stainless Steel it is extremely easy to keep clean.
Will the eDrometer be able to determine the Alcohol content of a Liqueur, something with a high sugar content, and potentially solids as well?
The eDrometer can determine % alcohol for distilled fluids with an SG below 1. In addition, the eDrometer can measure suspended solids, as long as they are suspended, but the SG value will include the density of the solids as well. The proof of your distilled alcohol can be easily determined by taking the % alcohol value from the eDrometer and multiplying by 2.
The normal operating range for taking a measurement with the eDrometer is 10°C to 60°C. Fluids outside of this range can be placed into the sensor, but it is recommended that the temperature be stabilized between 10°C and 60°C before a measurement is taken.
We are still determining the acceptable range for fluids to be placed into the sensor without damaging it, so stayed tuned for an update.
The eDrometer is capable of being powered in two ways. The first is a DC power adapter capable of supplying 9-12V. The second option is a 9V battery for portability.
The DC power input is Full Bridge rectified to ensure it works with both a positive center and negative center wall adapter.
