What is Albedo:
ACP164 is set in a universe invented 30 years ago by Steve Gallacci for his comic series, Albedo Anthropomorphics.
This world is populated by sapient mammals and avians. There are two main factions: ConFed, whose forces include Extra-Planetary Defence Force (EDF), and the Independent Lapine Republic (ILR).
The headline story in the Albedo comic was Erma Felna: EDF, a science fiction military setting, focusing on Erma Felna, a young feline officer who turns out to have a pivotal role in a series of complex political conflicts.
The series is sophisticated and thoughtful, blending hard science and practical military weaponry with cute furry creatures. There are no blasters or zap guns, no clone armies or death stars, just critters trying to make sense of their existence against a starry backdrop.
There have previously been two role playing games set in the Albedo universe. They were fun games that interpreted the Albedo universe well, and lots of people still play them today. Now, thirty years after the release of the original RPG, we are moving the the next logical progression – introducing miniature rules without an RPG element, but with a set of useful figures and vehicles.
All the content and background is compatible with either RPG version, and the campaign book is written to be useful for RPG gamers.
What's it like to play?
What are reviewers saying about Albedo Combat Patrol?
"The figures and game concept have that uniqueness, something ‘different’, and that stands out in a market that is pretty much saturated. Overall, this is a welcome option for sci - fi gamers, backed up by a proven game system that covers a host of genres."
Wargames Illustrated Prime Time Review
Getting started with Albedo Combat Patrol.
We want you to be able to get started with Albedo Combat Patrol straight away and to participate in play testing and the final direction of the rules.
For this reason, we have made an introductory 'beta test' version of the basic rules, together with the action and activation decks available for download as a pdf file.
We have also made the basic troop types (EDF Heavy Infantry & ILR Skirmish Infantry) available for purchase straight away, outside the kick starter. Click here to take a look at them at Sally 4th Website. The reason we have done this is so that you can see the quality of the miniatures, participate in the play test and not have to wait until everything is delivered to start playing.
Once you have backed the project, you will have access to our first update that contains details of how to download them. The introductory rules contain all the information needed to play an 'Infantry' game. The full rule set (available through the kickstarter) adds rules for vehicles, indirect fire weapons, crew served weapon systems, night fighting, spotting, non-lethal weapons, fighting in zero G and expanded rules for heroes, leaders, characters and advancement.
What do I need to play Albedo Combat Patrol?
To play Albedo Combat Patrol you will need:
- the Albedo Combat Patrol rules, action and activation decks (either printed or PDF)
- Anthropomorphic Sci-Fi Miniatures
- Gaming accessories tokens / templates etc
Albedo Combat Patrol: The Albedo Miniatures Rule System
It is important to us that the rule set suits the new game. We’ve worked with Buck Surdu before, on versions of his “Combat Patrol” Rules, and we thought his card based system would provide the fast-paced game we were looking for. We’ve worked with him to create a set of rules that works well for a science fiction setting, updating and expanding on the bones of Combat Patrol to create a new version of the game tailored to the Albedo setting.
Combat resolution is resolved by flipping cards. Players read different sections of the cards in the Action Deck depending on what they are trying to do: shooting, resolving hits, “rolling” to penetrate enemy vehicles, hand-to-hand combat, movement, and morale. Flipping a card is essentially the same as rolling a die and looking up the result on a table.
The advantage is that you don’t have to spend ages looking up tables.
Flip a card and determine whether you got a hit. If so, flip the next card to see which target figure was hit, how severely, and whether they are protected by cover. The result of this is a fast paced, exciting game which is intuitive and plausible with all of the detail and subtlety of squad based sci-fi combat without need for the chart look ups and clutter that can so easily slow down the best of games.
The Albedo Miniatures Sourcebook
A problem with SF games is that without a clearly articulated background, it’s hard to get involved in the story. Part of the success of the Warhammer series is the deep and complex background story. We think that the Albedo story is just as interesting, with the undoubtedly evil ILR facing the competent, but bureaucratic EDF.
Our sourcebook describes the background to the Albedo universe, and the detail of the First Lepine War, as well as the tactics, troop formations, weapons and equipment in use in each stage of the war, as well as the present day.
It includes the first installment in what we hope will be a series of campaign books.
Albedo Miniatures are 28mm Heroic Scale miniatures designed to be used with Albedo Combat Patrol miniatures rules or with a wide range of role playing games such as Albedo RPG, Traveller, GURPS, Gamma World etc. The miniatures in the range have been designed as multi-part metal castings consisting of a body (torso and legs combined), a pair of arms (where possible a pair cast onto the weapon), and a head & tail sprue.
There are a range of body types in development including EDF Heavy Infantry, EDF Light Infantry, ILR Skirmish Order, ILR Special Assault Order. Each body type is then converted into multiple poses such as Male:Patrolling, Female:Patrolling, Female:Running etc.
Each faction has a number of weapons available that troops can be equipped with. At the moment we have made the following weapons for the EDF : LAKW 1-56 (a powerful assault rifle), MPKW 2-18 (SMG type Machine Pistol), MAKW 3-60 (versatile machine gun that can either be set up as LMG on bipod or on tripod as a sustained fire MMG). We have made the following weapons for the ILR: ML 199 Carbine (a short barrelled basic carbine), AW 191 Assault Carbine (with underslung Grenade Launcher), MG 202 (versatile machine gun that can either be set up as LMG on bipod or on tripod as a sustained fire MMG).
Finally, the miniatures are designed to accommodate a separate head and tail. A growing range of heads have been sculpted including EDF uniform helmets (Cat, Dog, Fox), ConFed Home Guard style berets (Cat, Dog, Fox), ILR forage caps (two rabbit variants), ILR Garrison peaked caps (three rabbit head variants), bare headed (Cat, Dog, Fox, two Rabbit variants). The head & tail sprue also contains a square patch. This is because critters can elect to have their tail inside the uniform, in which case this represents the Velcro patch on the uniform and is glued on in place of the tail.
The last point to note about the miniatures is that they have been designed to be easy to glue together. Prior to designing this range, I have not been a fan of multi-piece metal castings, as I have had bad experiences of pieces that have flat joints which are difficult to align and move when you hold them for the glue to dry. We have overcome this problem by casting arms with a pin at the top that matches a recess in the shoulder. Similarly, heads are cast with a pin at the bottom of the neck that matches a recess in the body. The miniatures have also been digitally sculpted so the fit is very accurate.
Using the components that we have manufactured so far, it is possible to construct over 160 unique miniatures by mixing the components together, but we are hoping to produce many, many more via this kickstarter.
Buildings & Terrain
Albedo is based on a rich comic book heritage which has a very different look and feel to it than many of the dark, gothic brands of sci-fi miniature gaming that many of us are used to, so we wanted to create a complete gaming environment that captures this. We have designed and developed a complete range of detailed sleek, modern, plexi-glass and steel urban buildings with solar panels and air filtration units. The range includes a Hab Block (apartments), a Biz Block (shops and offices) and a Fab Block (factory / workshop, where things get fabricated).
Accessories include a matching road system and scatter terrain. As a lot of scenarios take place in and around buildings we have also developed a multi layout terrain set which comprises standard building modules with glazed windows, opening doors and innovative 3D Decals that can be re-arranged to provide countless terrain layouts featuring building interiors.
Why are we running a Kickstarter?
Sally 4th started working on the Albedo Miniatures Game a year ago in conjunction with a fantastic team of writers and designers from Australia, America and Spain. We have developed the game to a point where we have detailed background material, an innovative rules system and the start of a great looking miniatures range. We have invested all of the funds that we have available to get to this stage and now need some support from the world wide miniature gaming community to bring the game to market and to develop it to its full potential. The funds that we raise from this Kick starter will be used to publish the first three books (Rulebook, Sourcebook and Campaign Book), if we get sufficient backers we will make a boxed version of the game available.
We also have a very long list of additional miniatures and vehicle kits that we would like to make including new species, new weapons, new troop types, character models and both ground based combat vehicles and aerodynes.
Why Back the Kickstarter?
We have commissioned a special Ltd edition Erma model. These castings are limited to 500 and will be dispatched with a Ltd edition certificate. We will be including a free copy to the first 500 backers who pledge £50 or more.
Species Diversity: We will ensure that every pledge that includes miniatures will be dispatched with the widest range of new species heads and tails and poses unlocked via stretch goals.
The City Planner Pledge
If you are just interested in picking up some great looking sci-fi terrain, this could be the pledge for you.
Down in the Tube Station Pledge
We are very excited about this one, designed by our collaborators over at N-FX this is a very exciting set of terrain to fight over. Although designed for Albedo (there are scenarios in the campaign book set in a subway station), this terrain set could be used for a wide range of sci-fi and other periods.
We would like to make every species, weapon, character and vehicle that appears in the Albedo comic available to you to collect, paint, enjoy and use in your tabletop gaming adventures. We need to start somewhere so we have identified the next miniatures that we would like to produce as stretch goals. For each additional £1,000 raised we will be able to add another miniature to our miniature Albedo universe. If the stretch goal is an additional species we will add that to the random selection of critters in unit packs, if the goal is for a new weapon we will add a pack of miniatures armed with it to the list of possible add ons.
The cost of shipping is not included in pledges. We anticipate that what we ship to most backers will be a mix of pledge plus add ons, so it is very difficult to estimate what this will be in advance. We will find cheapest way to send your pledge, at the point of dispatch and send a separate PayPal invoice for this.
Risks and challenges
All projects include an element of risk, but we believe that we have done enough work up front both in the planning and development of this project to have reduced the risk to a manageable level.
The miniatures, other than the ones that we are hoping to fund through stretch goals have already been designed, 3D printed and master molds made from them. We have established good relationships with the companies involved in these three miniature production activities so are quiet certain that given the amount of time we have allowed to complete the project, the miniatures will be produced on time.
So far we have run 6 kick starters and one Indiegogo project. These have all been successfully funded and delivered on time. Two of the previous projects have been for producing miniatures.
The production of rules and source book is at an advanced stage. We will be making a free PDF copy of the rules available to backers to enable them to start playing straight away.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
