About this project

By creating a documentary film we hope to inspire parents to discover, explore, and connect more deeply with their children, families and community--and encourage them to create new programs in their communities across the country.

Playgroup in the Park, is a collaborative learning program connecting parents, children, teachers and pedagogy. This innovative program has transformed our lives and the lives of the many parents and families who have participated in it.

"Our entire society would benefit if more children were exposed to an experience like this," says a Playgroup parent alumnus and current member of Faculty.

We’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a documentary film. The purpose of this film is to share the Playgroup experience with parents, schools, communities and organizations, and hopefully spark contagious inspiration around the country.

Watch the short teaser film to give you a taste of what the longer film would bring. There's so much more to share about the Playgroup experience and explore in a longer film.

We invite you to share this journey with us and to be part of the process.  Join us in creating a documentary film about this unique program. We can not make the film without your support!

Every contribution gets us closer to making the film a reality.

Filmmaker Tien's Story:

As a working mom of 4, my life can feel overscheduled, overprogrammed, and maxed out. In the struggle to provide, care for, and be responsible for my family, I could easily lose sight of my priorities and miss out on opportunities to connect more deeply with my family, friends, and community. Without consciously carving out the time and mental space to do so--to focus on what matters most--my life can quickly feel out of balance and overwhelmingly chaotic.

Coming to Playgroup in the Park became a kind of respite and safe haven. It brought me back to truly appreciating my toddler son—away from the distractions of everyday life. Carving out time each week to spend with him at Playgroup transformed my life and deepened my relationship with him--reminding me of the joys of parenting. These are memories and experiences I will cherish forever.

As I got to know Laura O. Martin, Founder of Playgroup in the Park, and the Playgroup model, we both realized a film would be an important way to share Playgroup’s core practices and its model with a larger community.

Combining my background as a documentary film producer with the vision Laura has created, creates a perfect partnership.

The Playgroup approach is unique to early childhood enrichment. From the child-led exploration in a highly visual and artistic classroom setting, to the tremendous respect for each child inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, to the direct access to beauty and natural surroundings within Glen Echo National Park, the Playgroup model cultivates deeper, more meaningful relationships for parents, children, and their community.

"Playgroup is an oasis in our fast-paced, technology-obsessed society, a respite from testing and outcome-based educational practices. To give our children the time and space to discover who they could become at the beginning of their educational journey is a priceless gift. Playgroup’s focus on creativity, imagination, and opportunity could have monumental impacts on the way our young children grow and develop into our future leaders," says a Playgroup parent and former elementary school teacher.

We invite you to watch the teaser film and partner with us to make this film happen.

We can not do it without you!

Together, let’s connect, collaborate and spread contagious inspiration across the country!

Thanks very much for your support!

To produce a professional quality film that will be premiered in Washington DC. The "build a community reward" level will provide a sneak peak screening in 5 cities across the country.

To reach as many parents as possible, we plan to partner with schools, organizations and communities to create events to show the film.

To launch a website for parents, schools, teachers and communities to be able to collaborate from every corner of the globe and continue the conversation we have sparked.

To hopefully make it available to Public Television stations across the country.

Our target goal to complete the film is $158,000.

Playgroup in the Park (PGiP) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Contributions to this project will receive a letter upon request acknowledging the contribution amount. Please consult with an accountant on any tax matters related to contributions.

Thanks for your support! Your generous contribution in any amount will help us meet our goal.

Risks and challenges

Our greatest risks and challenges lie in raising the production funding that's needed to produce the film that Playgroup deserves.

Up until now, we’ve had incredibly generous donations of time and production services by top notch film and television professionals who support the project, the programs, and our efforts to make the film.

We are extremely grateful and could not have made the trailer without the generous support of valued friends and colleagues, as well as the parents and Playgroup faculty who have already taken the time to be filmed and continue to support our efforts overall.

Going forward, the production funds will be used to build the production team and creative resources that the documentary needs in order to be produced.

We need your help in order to make the film and communicate Playgroup's core themes and practices widely—observing one’s environment, living and being "in the moment," discovery and exploration, collaboration, and the overall theme of contagious inspiration.

As we create the documentary over the course of the next school year, we will inevitably discover additional topics and themes in the film. We’re confident that we’ll be able to incorporate all the fundamental topics and themes for the film if we're successfully funded.

We'll use the production funds as efficiently as possible and stretch every dollar raised in support of the film.

We can't produce this film without you!

Each and every contribution gets us closer to making this film a reality!

Thanks for your support from the bottom of our hearts!
