Overview

Here Now is our effort to take our working concept of multi purpose space across the country to NYC for four weeks this spring. Operating out of a subleased commercial venue, Here Now will be a gallery and work space for participating artists to collaborate, as well as a temporary retail shop and a setting for events.

Instead of creating a static retail-only environment, we will be featuring products and their makers in the same room. This will be a space where you can shop while watching beautiful objects being created by skilled crafts people all around you. You can buy hand printed posters right off the press, have a new dress custom fit by the person who made it, or watch the way an installation work evolves and transforms the room around you. We will be assembling a dynamic working environment that celebrates hand made products as well as the people and processes employed to create them.

The spectrum of work ranges from installation art to film, music, fashion and furniture. While our specialties vary, what we have in common is an engagement with creative processes that is just as important as the products created. And this, more than anything, is what we want to share through Here Now.

In line with our goal of utilizing a space beyond a singular purpose we will be hosting classes, workshops, dinners, fashion shows, concerts and parties daily and nightly at Here Now. An integral part of the larger experience, these happenings will allow more opportunity for community involvement, participation and exchange of ideas. Classes and workshops will afford an opportunity to share skills and information. Concerts, fashion shows, art openings, and performance events will create exciting ways to observe and present art in form and motion. Dinners and parties will give us the time and space to celebrate, share, and meet one another.

Here Now

The title of our project, Here Now speaks to the physical space we’ll occupy, the ephemeral quality of our work, and the immediacy of the moments we have in the space. Here Now is about making things, but the ‘things’ aren’t necessarily the point. The objects we create are important, but the act of making is equally significant. Here Now values the process of creating, the materials used in production, the space in which we work, and the conversation and connection among makers.

History and Context

Nathan Reimer, Alexa Stark, Galen Koch and Kendyll Gage-Ripa are all involved in the operation of two alternative art/retail spaces in Portland, Oregon’s Alberta Arts District. The Make House, founded by Nathan Reimer in early 2011, is a craftsman work space connected to a retail shop that showcases the work of its resident artists and builders. Down the road is Alexa Stark’s self-named retail/ sewing house. Founded in 2012, AlexaStark features the work of nationally recognized designers, artists, musicians and filmmakers, and hosts events and concerts several times a month.

Here Now will run from May 16th to June 13th 2013 in New York City.

Your contribution to this project will help facilitate the space and enable participating artists in the following ways:

The Space: We will be renting a space in New York City for 4 weeks from May to June 2013. $4000

Materials: Each artist will be given a stipend for materials and tools. This is the largest expense for this project and for us one of the most important. Here Now is about a space but it is also about the artists involved. By providing them with budgets for materials and tools we are ensuring them the opportunity to work and create unrestricted. This money will also help us produce all the incentives that we are offering to support funding this kickstarter $13,000

Transportation and Shipping: Plane tickets for us to get from Portland to New York. Shipping for materials, tools, products and everything else that will be cheaper to ship than buy again. $3000

Presentation, Display and Decor: This is everything that we’ll need to make the space functional and presentable. Clothing racks, paint, hardware, frames for presenting art, front desk, lighting, etc. $1500

Events: Everything we’ll need to rent or purchase to provide ambiance and substance for events and gatherings. Speakers, lights, live music and food $1500

This project is exciting for us because we’ve been seeing its effect and success in our community here in Portland. We understand the magic of creating and sharing communally and we are thrilled to take this work cross country to a city so full of creation and exchange.

In a world full of plastic trinkets and discardable technology hand-crafted goods made with intention and care are increasingly significant and potent.

Here Now is our way of celebrating and sharing that work.

Thank you for your support and contribution!

Risks and challenges

We face several challenges heading into this project. The most obvious risk for us is the potential that we will not reach our fundraising goal. If we are successful, then one challenge will be finding the right space in New York for Here Now. We will also be working with many artists and collaborators to complete this project and, of course, this codependency may lead to challenges in the final realization of Here Now. We are confident, however, in the dedication and professionalism of the artists we have involved thus far in our project and we believe that, despite the challenges we face, this project will be a successful example of artistic and creative collaboration.
