Welcome to Doddl and the launch of this award winning product - Doddl Children's Cutlery. Doddl is a revolutionary approach to designing a knife, fork and spoon. Principally aimed to help make meal times easier, it also enables children to learn to eat independently from a young age.
- Doddl is a unique and revolutionary range of children's cutlery helping to make meal times easier.
- Doddl aims to prepare children to eat independently by the time they reach school age.
- Doddl cutlery encourages children to intuitively use a pincer grip, which is an essential skill for drawing and writing.
- Children as young as 2 years old can effectively cut food with the knife, which is designed to better support their hand and wrist.
The Problem: Existing children's cutlery is not easy to use
Existing children’s cutlery/flatware is simply a smaller version of adult cutlery but young children struggle with these long handled utensils as they do not have the dexterity, coordination or control to manage these implements effectively. Young children in particular cannot effectively use a knife; it requires a lot of strength and control in the wrist and hand to cut food; children have not developed this skill and strength hence they often resort to fingers.
To help your child more easily and effectively feed themselves, we have created Doddl cutlery, a 3-piece knife, fork and spoon set specifically designed for young children.
The unique design of the handles allows Doddl cutlery to sit comfortably within the child’s palm. The spoon and fork handles encourage children to use the pincer grip, which helps to develop finger strength and control. Pincer grip development is also essential for other skills such as drawing and writing.
- Doddl cutlery is shorter than standard kids cutlery. The handle has been designed to sit within the palm of the hand to aid control.
- The shortened design of the handle also promotes successful hand-eye coordination.
- Doddl is designed so that young children instinctively grasp the handle with a 'Pincer' grip thus helping them progress from the basic 'Palmar' grip.
- Doddl helps to achieve key development milestones such as the 'Pincer' grip.
- Doddl encourages children to work on key hand skills and finger movements needed for drawing, writing and many other activities.
Children have not developed the strength in their wrist and hand to use long handled standard knives, which means parents usually cut up their child's food for them
- The unique design of the Doddl knife supports the child's hand and wrist so they can effectively apply sufficient force to cut through food.
- Doddl's design helps children develop their fine motor skills (finger strength and control).
Doddl Cutlery has been designed specifically for young children to allow them to successfully eat more independently
- Children become more engaged with meal times because they can manage their own food (including cutting it up).
- Children love having their very own cutlery set; it makes them feel special and grown-up because they can eat like mummy and daddy.
*The Doddl cutlery set is ideal for toddlers and younger children. I introduced my daughter to them when she was just 12 months old and I was amazed at how she immediately held them correctly encouraging good motor skills at such an early age. I highly recommend this product for any child learning to use a cutlery set or even for the older child, as my six year old enjoyed using them too. Mel, Mum of Olive (12 Months)*
*Aubrey took to using her Doddl cutlery straight away; using the spoon and fork seems to be intuitive and she is really developing her cutting skills with the knife now. Thank you Doddl! Susie H, Mum of Aubrey (26 months)*
*Children regularly have issues with the fine motor skills needed to use standard cutlery appropriately. They often struggle to cut up their own food, which in a school setting can mean that they either need help from an adult, or don’t finish eating their meal. Developing suitable strength and grip in early childhood would enable them to hold and use cutlery effectively and would have a dramatic impact on school dinner time. Kate C, Primary School Teacher*
*Excellent design. Really great to have a spoon my 16-month old can use without food falling off. He used a perfect pincer-grip Finn O, Mum (16 month old boy)*

Doddl is proud to be joining forces with a British manufacturer to produce our cutlery. Our manufacturer shares the same commitment to quality. Being able to manufacture in the UK was an important principle of our business model.
Once funded, final-stage tooling will commence and our manufacturer is aiming to produce the first sets of Doddl Cutlery in September 2015.
Now that we have our final designs, we are seeking funding to cover the costs associated with tooling and manufacturing. We are looking to raise £10,000 to complete the tooling phase of manufacturing of our revolutionary range of Doddl cutlery.
As a thank you to our funders, we have put together a series of great rewards for you to get your hands on…well, maybe not your hands…maybe you can buy a set for your child or as a really useful gift for a young relative…after all, they have been designed for children!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our pitch. We are very grateful for your support in helping us to achieve our funding goal. Please spread the word about Doddl by sharing the link for our Kickstarter page on Facebook and Twitter and invite your friends to join the Doddl revolution!
Thank you for helping us make meal times a Doddl.
Q) For what age children is the cutlery suitable?
A) Children can begin using Doddl cutlery from approx 12 months (starting with the spoon). The cutlery is suitable for children up to the age of 5 years old, or until they are ready to transition onto normal adult cutlery.
Q) Is the cutlery dishwasher safe?
Q) If I select the Personalised option, where is the name written?
A) The child's name will be written along one side of the knife's blade
Q) This cutlery is more expensive than the standard cutlery I buy in the supermarkets/malls, what am I getting for the extra money?
A) Doddl cutlery is made out of high quality, food safe materials and is manufactured in the UK. The cutlery feels luxurious and the soft touch areas provide a much better grip and support for the child. This cutlery is built to last, so is great value when considering it will be used every day for years. It is also encouraging your child to develop key skills - something most other cutlery on the market does not do.
Q) Is Doddl cutlery suitable as a gift?
A) Doddl cutlery makes a great gift for family or friends with little ones. It is a unique product that the children will love because they will find eating easier and the parents will love because it is useful.
Please note, final manufactured product may vary very slightly to the designs illustrated i.e. the exact area covered by the soft-touch material and the exact shade of colours used.
Risks and challenges
We have been very thorough in managing this process and the development of this product. The main challenge was hitting new boundaries with regards to injection moulding. To address this concern and to ensure we could deliver as promised to all our backers, we developed pre-production prototype tooling. Using prototype tooling, the conditions of the manufacturing process could be thoroughly tested and we are happy with the quality of samples. Therefore, we are confident we can produce a high quality item once we move into full scale production.
We will be working with our Distributor (Bebe Elephant) to ensure a smooth transition of processing everyone's order, once the product is ready.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
