A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

What is chipboard?
Chipboard is most commonly used in shipping boxes and packaging, made from recycled paper and wood waste. It is durable, strong and a beautiful material that feels great to the touch. It is also an incredibly honest material, our chipboard is natural and contains no dye and is 100% recyclable. Our elastic band is checkered woven from the highest quality cotton and polyester.
How strong is it?
We picked 1.2mm thick, high-density boards (650-800kg/m3). Chipboard is a proven material most commonly used to protect fragile items.
How durable is chipboard?
The chipboard we use is an industrial-grade chipboard. It is used in construction, car manufacturing and shipping. It's strong, lightweight and easy to work with.
Doodle on it, tell a story, gift it, go ahead. Draw a message and give it as a truly unique gift to your friends, family or loved ones. Tell a story or keep it blank, make it anyway you want it, make it about you.
The Design and Manufacturing Process
Chipwallet is made from both dye-cut and laser cut parts. The texts on the plates are beautifully debossed. We first select the type of chipboards and density, from there the boards are cut into the final size and the individual plates are then die-cut and texts put in place.
Prototypes: We went through many iterations to find the perfect combination for the plate functions, various ways to hold the cards and items, and how to access them easily yet securely.
We gave a few to some friends and they all love the look and feel of our lightweight wallet.
Early ideas include "themed plates" like Traveller's plate, Photogropher's plate, function specific plates that carry specific items like SD cards, SIM cards with paperclip and even coins cards. In the end, we decided to make the cash/miscellaneous card that can hold folded dollar bills and other flat items as it is the most versatile option.
About Chipwallet. Co
We are a 3 person team based in Irvine, CA. We create products that we want to use but can’t find them in the market. We love to design products using combining common materials/methods and bring them to new unexpected uses.
So help us bring this unique item to the market and become part of the process in bringing cool things to others.
Even though we have designed a product that is aimed at simplicity of use and production, there will still be challenges and risks. We aim to manufacture this product in the United States, so we anticipate the cost to be higher. Another challenge is to make the product as high quality as possible, ensuring each and every detail, edge finish, and logo stamp looks great. Lastly will be adhering to the delivery schedule, we are at a very advanced prototype stage and have worked with vendors to ensure we allow enough lead time for tooling and set-up plus manufacturing/packaging time.
