Neil Gaiman once described his ideas for stories as a giant holding pattern of projects circling the runway, waiting for their turn to be brought in for landing.
Today, I’d like to ask for your help landing a plane.
My name is Suzanne Purkis and I’m a writer. I’m currently working on a novel that I am very excited about—and I hope to get you excited about it too. It’s called The Ending.
The Ending is set in a dystopian future, where an unknown enemy has wiped out most of humanity in a biological warfare attack that was supposed to kill us all.
The humans who survive the attack discover they’ve been forever altered, as they begin to develop strange mutations and abilities.
The story centers on Coralie, an orphaned survivor whose mutation allows her to communicate with canines. As she navigates the world she now lives in, she gathers her pack and sets off in search of other survivors.
Several years later, Coralie learns that the children of survivors are being taken by the enemy. Stolen under the cover of night and secreted away to massive compounds that now stand in the fallen cities of Earth.
As the fear and tension mounts, events conspire to bring two strange creatures into Coralie’s life. The first is a fox hybrid with a very special gift and the second is a stranger who will turn Coralie’s brave new world upside down in a fight to save what’s left of humanity.
A literary agent said the following about my work: "Likeable heroine with a strong voice. Well-written—clear, concise."
But I wouldn't expect you to make a contribution without judging my writing for yourself, so you can read an excerpt from The Ending here.
You can also check out more of my writing on my blog, Apoplectic Apostrophes. I typically write a combination of fiction and non-fiction every week. If you like what you read, please consider coming back to make a contribution.
What’s my plan?
Your contributions will allow me to set aside the time to finish researching and writing my novel. Being able to dedicate my time exclusively to writing will ensure The Ending is a strong and polished novel, worthy of publishing.
Your support will also help me build a strong community that demonstrates interest in my writing and a viable market for my book. Not only is that really good for my ego, but it also looks good to potential publishers.
What’s in it for you?
I'm hoping to raise $12,000, which is enough money to cover my research, overhead, and administrative costs for about six months.
I've put together a bunch of perks for every level of funding. Here are some of the perks you could receive:
- A copy of my book The Eight Parts of Speech: A Grammar Ghoul Guide. Grammar has never been so much fun!
- A copy of my micro-fiction and poetry book Fifty-two x 33: A Year in 33 Words.
- A PDF or limited edition print version of the finished manuscript for The Ending (see Update 1 for details).
- A signed, limited edition copy of my four original character sketches for The Ending.
- An original short story written just for you.
- An edit and manuscript evaluation of one of your short stories.
- Immortalization of your dog as a character in The Ending (there is also a special level for one lucky cat person)!
Other ways you can help
I know not everyone is in a position to help out financially, but if you’re inspired by my writing and would like to see The Ending in print, then please spread the word!
- Share my campaign on Facebook, Twitter, other Internet venues—and at your local pub, coffee shop, yoga studio, etc.
- Follow my blog and tell your friends about me.
- Follow me on Twitter or Facebook.
- Buy one of my books from Lulu.com
- Volunteer at your local animal shelter, wildlife rescue, library, or literacy organization.
Acknowledgments and Gratitude
Finally, I want to say a big thank you to Manuel Guzman, aka Lolo, for bringing Coralie and her dogs to life in his gorgeous painting. He is an incredibly talented artist. To see more of his work, visit his website at www.LolosArt.com.
I also owe a huge thank you to VNV Nation for granting me permission to use their song Generator (from their recent album Transnational) in my pitch video. VNV Nation is about to start a North American tour—you should check them out if they come to your city.
Risks and challenges
Because I'm asking you to fund a Work in Progress, there is always the chance that I won't finish the book within the timeframe I've allotted. Life and writer's block can rear their ugly heads when you least expect it. That said, I am 100% committed to telling Coralie's story. The outline is complete. My main characters have all been sketched. I've started writing. All I need now is some uninterrupted time to finish writing.
Your support is my incentive and my inspiration. I write because I have to, but sharing my writing with such incredible people makes it so much more meaningful.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
