HOOCH - The Card Game (Canceled)
Hooch is a fun and intense card game set during Prohibition. Bribe, rob and drink your way to victory.
It’s the Roaring ‘20’s. The Don is dead, to begin with. There’s no doubt whatsoever about that. The city’s in chaos, but the giggle water must flow. Now all the would be rulers of the city have formed into Syndicates, each vying to take over the illegal alcohol market. What’s an entrepreneur to do? It’s simple, you get some guys, knock over a joint, put up your Still, make sure you can protect it and the swells will come running for the joy juice. But hell, as they say, is other people. Rival syndicates want nothing more than to take you down. Maybe they’ll hit you with City Politics and shut your place down through the those dirty crooks in the government. That’s them being nice. The not so nice way? They send a Firebug to torch the place, burn you out and force you to back to square one. You can hire a crew to help you but it will cost. Get yourself a Mouthpiece, maybe a Smuggler too. Take on your rivals, keep the firewater flowing and you could rule the city. The things people will go through just to have a good time. Welcome to HOOCH.
HOOCH is a fun and intense resource management card game for 3-6 players set during Prohibition. Each player controls a Syndicate, a groups of like minded ne’er-do-wells. The object of the game is to be the first to get the set amount of hooch before your rivals. But that’s easier said than done. First you’ve got to take control of a location, put up a still, and hire some muscle to defend it. The other syndicates are doing the same, but they’re also trying to stop you from becoming the most powerful crime lord in the city. They might go to war, sending their soldiers to take out your operation. Or maybe they’ll send a Button Man in to take out all your guys and then they can stroll in and take over the place themselves. Sure you’ll have your own Syndicate members to help you, but that won’t get you all the way. You’re going to need a public face as well. Maybe you should bribe a Judge. He can help you with all those pesky City Politics they might throw at you. Maybe a Mouthpiece to help the law bend your way. But something to keep in mind: you paid them off, maybe someone else might be able to pay more. Hooch is a game of alchohol, greed, backstabbing and violence. It’s the American way.
This ain’t Uno. Hooch is a big game. It comes out to over 500 cards. Now keep in mind, those will not be in your hand. It’s made up of stacks of characters available for purchase, crew members, action cards and of course the titular Hooch. You’ll also get unique location cards, perfect for putting up a still and loading up with your crew. For this Kickstarter campaign, you’ll get the full game with some additional bonuses. First off, we’ll never be able to sell it this cheap again. Secondly, we’re creating an exclusive Kickstarter Syndicate: The Kickstarts. They will only be available through Kickstarter and will not be offered with the retail version of the game. If you want them, you’ve got act now and back this game. Each copy of HOOCH contains:
- 160 cards divided into 4 syndicates (40 cards per syndicate)
- 75 crew cards in 4 unique styles
- 25 public character cards in 5 unique styles
- 30 action cards, each card is unique
- 60 Hooch cards
- 40 for the exclusive Kickstart syndicate
- 10 open and closed cards for your store fronts
- 9 store fronts
- PDF download for the rules
- And a few surprises
We wanted the goal amount to be much smaller, honest and true. But it turns out that’s not how the system works. To start, we are giving you the full version of the game which has a lot of cards. We play tested smaller versions, even a two player variant but we found that it works better at 3 or more players. More cards meant more opportunity for strategy. We think HOOCH is a robust, fulfilling and fun experience. We think you will too. As for manufacturing, we made contact with an amazing card manufacturer. They loved the game and were incredibly helpful in getting our numbers right. They allowed us to offer the full game in higher quality cards for a price point we loved and wanted to pass the savings onto you, our patrons. The catch is that we have to reach a higher minimum order. We could go lower, but it would double the price of the game. We decided you the backer deserved to get in at a great price point and we hope you are as excited by the game as we are.
The only way to be sure is to pledge. Once we’ve reached our $10K goal, we’ve got a lots of cool things planned. The first stretch goal we are announcing is an all female Syndicate. These lethal ladies are called The Snakecharmers. They can’t wait to make their debut, but that’s up to you. When this goal is reached, everyone who buys a copy of the game will get this stretch goal and the ones after that, as we are able to release them to you. That’s in addition to the The Kickstarters Syndicate you will get just for making your pledge during this campaign. We have some wonderful stretch goals planned, new cards, upgrades to the game, cool accessories and even a new Syndicate in the wings. Pledge your support and no only do you get cool stuff, but you help make the game even better for yourselves and your friends. It’s in your best interest to tell everyone you know. I know we are.
Talon Strikes Studios consists of two guys, Kyle Olson and Jason Washburn. That’s it. We’re not a fully staffed gaming studio or corporation looking to maximize profit. Just a couple of guys in Arizona with a dream. We created the company to further our passions. We started out in theater, independently funding our own youth theater programs and helping create props and costumes for other local groups. But we are both passionate about games and are determined to make our own. If you look at our history, you can see we tried once before. And although Kickstarter counts it as failure, in truth the rights to our previous game CLIQUE got picked up by a video game developer and is currently under development for the app market. We don’t count it as a loss. (Also, if we make a bit of profit from this one, we’re hoping to relaunch that game with some amazing new art. But that’s a discussion for another time.) We’re just a couple of guys who want to make cool things and bring you fun and interesting games to play. We hope you’ll help us with that and help fund HOOCH.
We have a lot of people to thank for all their help. First off, to our friends and family for giving us the time to work on the game, plus the many times we forced them to test out new mechanics during playtesting. And special thanks to the actors and crew who showed up to help us with our video. The quality we got for just gas money and pizza was astounding.
A special shout out goes to Quality Play Cards and Games. They have been amazing, helping us with quotes, showing us how the system works and answering our endless questions. If you need any cards made, we'd highly recommend them.
These guys are super awesome.
Risks and challenges
For you, the risks are pretty minimal. The game is done and has been playtested numerous times, much to the annoyance of our friends and family. We went through several versions over the last six months until we found the right formula that combined strategy and dumb luck with a lot of fun. The cards are done and ready to be sent off. As we mentioned above, we already have a great partner ready to help us manufacture the cards. We’re allowing some extra time because production always takes longer than you think it will. Plus the cards have to be shipped from China. Then we assemble the games, and they wing their way to your door. The shirts are by a local company we’ve worked with in several times in the past and their turnaround time is super quick not to mention the shirts come out with great craftsmanship. The same goes for the custom boxes for our High Rollers. We’re very proud of the work we’ve done and we can’t wait to get it into your hands.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
