This campaign is to help us finish the construction of a gallery/store at our Marfa Maid Goat Dairy in Marfa, Texas. This Kickstarter will help us purchase materials to complete the building that we have already started.
Over the past 10 years, Allan and I have worked toward the vision of a simple micro artisan dairy that makes fine goat cheese and helps to spread our love of the animals and the land, Far West Texas. First we built the dairy and acquired our equipment to milk and make cheese, Several years later we built a screened porch to welcome the visitors on our weekly dairy tours. Now we want to complete the experience by showing our guests the artistic vision behind Marfa Maid.
Our cheeses have become part of the unique offerings of the area. Local restaurants proudly publicize their fare includes Marfa Maid Goat Cheese. We have been written up in magazines, books and are considered “a must see “ attraction when visiting Marfa. Even Anthony Bourdain spoke glowingly of our queso fresco when he was filming one of his last episodes focusing on Far West Texas.
We can’t deny that even with all this wonderful support and attention, a little dairy in West Texas struggles to make ends meet. To continue to follow this dream we need to enhance our income beyond our cheese product. Malinda is also an exceptional artist, doing gorgeous painting, prints and watercolors of the native grasses and landscape. We feel sure that given an opportunity to display her vision (and other artists) will attract our visitors to bring something home with them. Our little store will also have some Marfa Maid Brand products such as hats, t-shirts, mugs, goats milk soap, and lotion.
Two years ago we started to build a metal building for the gallery/store but time and the unexpected dramatic rise of steel costs has slowed us down. We are hoping our friends of the “little dairy on the prairie” will want to see us finish our vision and will contribute to our cause. The Kickstarter is only to purchase materials for the building. We expect to do much of the labor. If our projects exceeds its goal the remainder will be to hire help to speed up the completion.
Risks and challenges
We have already started the building and its basic structure is there. The costs of building materials is always fluid so its possible materials could go up. Probably the first thing we would do with the proceeds of the Kickstarter would be to buy the major building materials so we won’t be caught short if they do go up unexpectedly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
