What's it About?
The Socialist is a story from the point of view of lovable, yet socially awkward, Laurie Timple, who is in need of a job in a rough economy. She’s a sub-par writer who knows nothing of computers thanks to her technology fearing, animal rights activist’s parents. Through a turn of events, including an oil spill in the Great Salt Lake and a freak crocodile attack, she finds herself hired at a social media company and has to learn to interact with the natives on and offline.
We love the idea of poking fun at social media and the influence it has on society but "The Socialist" also subtly explores each of our insecurities and how we may or may not see them in one another. Basically, everyone's a dork in their own way.
What Makes Our Web Series Different?
There are hundreds of thousands of web series out there so... what makes ours different? Once put into motion, "The Socialist" will be a living, breathing entity written specifically for the web. We have scripted eleven (four to eight minute) episodes but we aren't stopping there! If there isn't a main episode out one week there will be a very funny, quick side story filling fans in on the lives of some of our hilarious supporting characters. This will include choose your own adventure style videos, social media interaction, holiday specials, and the feeling that these people really exist.
What Have We Done?
We are a little over half way done filming Season One and will be completed by mid September with eleven (four to eight minute) episodes. That means we will have about an hour of content ready to edit, color, score, and show to the world by our release in October 2014!
How Will We Spend Your Money?
In order for this to be a success, for us to perpetuate this project, accomplish our goals, and provide you with hilarious Socialist content for years to come we need your help. Viewership is the key! Most of the money we collect from you here on Kick Starter will be going towards promotion and marketing. Spreading the word and obtaining significant viewership in this first season is integral to the future success of the show. If we can do it right to begin with and draw in the masses that then opens the flood gates for us to achieve optimal web distribution. With a large audience the project can become self-sustaining, it can become a gauge for how we should proceed to make “The Socialist” available to the most people for the longest amount of time. Whether that means hosting the show solely on our own website, selling ad space and pushing for sponsors or pitching the show to Netflix, viewership and visitors is what they are going to want to see in order to invest. That is where you come in, your donation will give us the jump-start we need to propel this project forward, obtain viewership, create local jobs, and make lifelong dreams come true! Thank you!
Here are some specifics of what the money will go towards but please keep in mind that MOST of the money will be going towards promotion and marketing.
- Editing (two editors working on Adobe Premiere Pro)
- Music- Original theme song and paying for the rights to pre-existing tracks
- Promotion-building a website, fliers, posters, social media ad space, trailers, radio ads, promotional appearances, ect.
- Prizes for you lovely folks!
- Local Premiere-Hosting a Premiere Screening for our Cast, Crew, Fans, Press, and Industry Professionals to create a buzz around the launch of our project
- Reimbursement- cast and crew travel, FOOD (the biggest expense of all!), props, and printing
- Kickstarter Fees- Kickstarter and Amazon charge close to 10% to use their service. Taking this into account will ensure we have provided enough costs in our budget to complete our project and get it out into the world!

Risks and challenges
Four years in the film industry has taught me that with any film project, production never goes exactly as planned. That being said we have planned accordingly. Since the beginning of the production process we have maintained a very detailed shooting schedule with lists of everything needed for each day of filming. Fortunately, our main location for the series is an office space so weather is not a big factor for delaying and causing problems.
The biggest challenges thus far have been juggling schedules, equipment, and props. We have been using a program written specifically for our production that keeps a database of all locations, characters, equipment, scenes, props, and basically everything involved in the production process and how they correlate to one another. Using this program we have been able to easily generate scene breakdowns that tell us where, who, and what is needed and it even generates estimated filming times based on number of pages in the script. These capabilities have and will continue to make it easy for us to rearrange schedules and make sure that everything we have planned out comes together.
The second biggest risk is not being able to achieve the outreach and viewership necessary to extend this project to multiple seasons. We are very conscious of this and since the birth of the project have been brainstorming creative methods to differentiate our web series from others and how we can get it seen by the masses. With graciously donated time from Marketing Industry professionals and a very creative production team we are assembling a killer marketing mix for our campaign using traditional mediums as well as many non-traditional. Your donation will be what will make this campaign a success. We are confident that with your help, we can not only hurdle the obstacle of viewership but soar high above it. Thank you for your vote of confidence and making a generous donation!
