About

Our project

We are SAMA and we are here to ask for your support to help us preserve the monumental artwork "Fatherhood" in VR before the piece is destroyed by the end of 2019.

 -- Not a typical museum --

Street Art Museum Amsterdam (SAMA) is an eco-museum, where art, community involvement, playfulness, and education are central. In our rapidly changing society, SAMA tells stories that we should not forget. With our collection of artworks in Amsterdam, the museum surprises and enriches visitors, local communities and society as a whole. Our street art pieces are where street art belongs, outside as part of the urban life of our city. Founded in 2010 as a means to stimulate the local economy, the museum functions as a community-led, open-air research laboratory that is constantly working to meet the typical expectations of the role of museums.

Some artworks from SAMA's collection

Over the last seven years, SAMA, in collaboration with renowned artists worldwide, has created and registered around 300 artworks. Many of them are still present in the collection, but around 70% have been removed, demolished or painted over. SAMA acknowledges that street art is tightly connected with the ever-changing urban realm, being an ephemeral and, most of the time, site-specific art form. Therefore the museum chooses to let the city’s urban dynamics play a major role in its collection, which brings the pieces closer to the local community and constantly creates space and opportunities to enrich the collection. It is this dynamism that makes SAMA’s collection special.

With this in mind, SAMA is constantly looking for strategies to document and preserve the history of our collection. During the last three years, the museum has invested in developing a Virtual and Augmented Reality documentation plan to preserve our pieces and the stories of our neighborhood for eternity.

-- Keeping it for eternity --

Fatherhood, a monumental mural made in 2015 by the Colombian artist Stinkfish, is the next artwork to be demolished due to the renovations happening in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The artwork is a masterful example of Stinkfish’s artistic style and one of the standout murals in SAMA’s collection. This piece is also one of the best examples of Stinkfish’s eye for locations: he typically chooses walls with great care, favoring those that are easily visible and in high traffic areas. The mural is located in the heart of a community that is home to many families and right across the street from a park. This artwork also has one of the largest ‘wow factors’ of any in SAMA’s collection. Not only does the work speak directly to issues encountered by many local residents, but it also brightens up the community and demonstrates the innate ability of street art to grab viewer’s attention and complement the existing architecture by bringing more visibility to a neglected space in the city.

We have less than 3 months to capture Fatherhood and bring it into Virtual Reality before it is gone forever.

-- About the Rewards --

We wanted everyone to experience Fatherhood in ways that would be impossible even in reality. To do this we used photogrammetry, a technique that allows reconstructing 3D objects from images. With a mixture of drone and ground shots, we were able to capture 457 high-quality images that were used to reconstruct the full artwork in 3D.

Photogrammetry reconstruction

This also allowed us to unleash our creativity and bring Fatherhood into another exciting world. Initially, you will experience standing at the base of the artwork while the museum's curator explains about its meaning for the community during a real tour that unfolds along the streets of Amsterdam. You will then be transported into an animated scene and venture this exciting journey guided by the trusted guardian of the artwork.]

You will be able to play the file of the 360 VR experience on a desktop, your mobile phone or use the custom-designed Google cardboard that you will receive with a pledge of 25 € or more. Below is a sample of how the final design is going to look like.

-- About the artist --

Bio

Though born in Mexico, Stinkfish grew up in Bogota, Colombia.  He spent his youth wandering the streets, absorbing the culture and learning from the people he met and spoke to throughout this youth, which is perhaps, in hindsight, where his fascination with creating images of people began.  His entry into street art began in the early 2000s with cutting stencils. By 2006, Stinkfish had curated a circle of young street artists around himself, all with a similar ethical basis regarding urban life and environmental impact, thus founding the international crew APC (Animal Power Culture).

Art

As an advocate for anonymity, Stinkfish chooses not to show his face believing that the art, rather than the artist, is what should be seen.  Stinkfish’s practice is recognizable for layering complex, intricate, and often psychedelic designs over high-contrast stencils of people and faces, which he converts from photos he (generally) takes of strangers, generally without their knowledge.  He has developed this complexity of practice through years of experimentation starting with stencil cutting and growing outward through experience in graphic design and freestyle graffiti; now combining both freehand and stencil elements in his work, Stinkfish is recognized for both his mastery of freehand painting from a technical perspective, as well as being among the first to combine stencil and freehand painting methodologies, often on a monumental scale.  He continues to generate and expand his multifaceted market and artistic impact, including a breadth of activities ranging from a collaboration with Prada in which he designed a fabric print and set backdrop, to community-based initiatives such as providing coaching and education for young artists and publishing a free tri-annual zine.

After nearly twenty years of painting, Stinkfish is widely represented in festivals and museums throughout Europe and Latin America, and remains one of the primary authentic subculture representatives in street art today, refusing to work with commercial or gentrifying street art initiatives.  Stinkfish continues to paint from the perspective of creating art for its fundamental expressive value, not for commercial purposes or fame, is the founder of the international collective, Animal Power Culture (APC).  Beyond the art he produces individually, Stinkfish works with the other roughly forty like-minded individuals in APC – including El Pez, El Mac, Paola Defin, and Retna –  who are committed to upholding these values to work as a consultant for new street art festivals and initiatives in Colombia and Mexico, such as Street Lynx, as well as providing coaching and education for younger up-and-coming painters.

-- Where will the money go? --

As a small nonprofit organization, the museum is struggling with making this major turn towards digital documentation of our art pieces due to a lack of resources to purchase the necessary equipment to conduct the project. Therefore, with your help we will purchase the following equipment and make the digitalization of our collection possible:

  • VR ready computer
  • Adobe Creative Cloud  license
  • 3D flow Photogrammetry software license
  • 360 stereoscopic camera (Insta 360 pro )
  • Camera DSLR (canon 200 D + lens)
  • Tripod
  • Drone (DJI Mavic )
  • Wire cam set up (Wiral Lite)

After the production of the Virtual and Augmented Reality memory capsule of Fatherhood the equipment acquired will be used to record other at-risk pieces of our collection and all the resulting memory capsules will be freely available for access on Youtube, ARize platform and the Google Arts and Culture.

Risks and challenges

The digital reward is at an advanced stage of development and we are confident every backer will be able to experience "Fatherhood". At this moment the exact length of the final product is not yet known. We guarantee a minimum of 4 minutes when the campaign is fully funded.
The fulfillment of the physical rewards (Google cardboard and Poster) might pose some logistic challenges especially in the case of large volumes. We are currently in contact with different printing companies to get precise quotations and be ready to ship worldwide within the expected timelines.
