What Is Feed?
Feed provides versatile rules for developing and playing in any sort of vampire mythos, whether your group's tastes run toward Stoker, Rice, or Whedon. Deep character creation and Strain creation implement your group's ideas directly into game mechanics; at the same time, Feed focuses tightly on the core themes of vampire roleplaying, with integral, session-structuring rules that keep each PC's growing addiction and transformation at the forefront of play. Feed's unique Trait and Hunger systems give you tools for vampire storytelling that no generic game can match, yet you remain in complete control of how vampirism works with your game's setting and style.
Feed is a 140-page game book that will be available in both PDF and print. The book contains the complete game rules, four sample Strains for inspiration and pick-up play, and a short guide to vampire fiction, with analysis and advice on adapting literary tropes to the RPG medium. When this project is funded, I'll release Feed under a Creative Commons ShareAlike license; the PDF version will be free, and the highly customizable system will be open for players and GMs to modify and redistribute as they please.

What Am I Backing?
I've already written and tested Feed, and I've paid for art and layout out of pocket. As an unknown author, I'm not asking backers to simply trust that I'll deliver. Feed is complete and ready for release. That's where I need your help.
I'm asking for your help to recoup my publication expenses so that I can make Feed available for free to the RPG community, especially those gamers like me who have never had a vampire RPG that quite supports the stories they want to tell.
I'm asking for $1,800 to cover my expenses. Here's the breakdown:
- CreateSpace POD set-up cost: $300
- Art: $529
- Layout: $500
- Rewards: $300
- Amazon and Kickstarter Charges: $180
(The perceptive reader will note that I still end up with negative $9; I am prepared to make a $9 sacrifice for art.)
As soon as the project is funded, I'll release Feed for free download, distribution, modification, etc. under a CC ShareAlike license. The print version will be available as a reward for backers and for sale at the lowest price that distribution channels will permit.
See the sidebar for reward levels ranging from $1 (you'll get credit in the Donors PDF supplement) to $500. Here are some details and photos to better explain the rewards available at each level:
Starting at the $35 level, we're offering crocheted vampires like those seen in the Safe Sucking series. These tiny Lords of Darkness are about three inches tall, and each one is handmade. Backers at the $35 level choose between Evil Steve, the Lesser Yarn Imp, and Mephistuffeles. Backers at higher levels can choose any of the designs below:
Each amigurumi is made of cotton and/or acrylic blend yard, with polyester fiber fill and plastic pellets. Decorations include embroidery floss, buttons, and glued-on felt. By default, the stuffies are not child-safe, but at any reward level that permits a custom design, you can request a child-safe version.
Most of these designs are adapted from patterns in Creepy Cute Crochet by Christen Haden. Check out her work at NeedleNoodles.
We're commissioning custom dice from Chessex as our basic dice reward. These d6's will feature the Feed logo on the 1's side; backers starting at the $25 level will get a set of 3 custom dice. At higher levels, we'll include a complete set of matching Chessex dice for Feed: 3d3, 3d4, 3d10, and 3d12, in addition to the custom 3d6.
These wooden dice coffins have an acrylic stain and a water-based satin finish. They're lined with red acrylic felt (made from 50% recycled material). They're 12.5 cm long, 7 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, large enough to hold an entire set of Feed dice with room to spare.
Because they're containers, we want to emphasize that these coffins are of moderate durability. They're sturdy enough for regular tabletop use, but you wouldn't want to toss one in the bottom of a backpack and go hiking.
The Donors PDF resource will contain a collection of mortal characters on mini-NPC sheets. Each one will have a description, Traits, and some ideas on where he or she might be found, so that GMs can pull up fleshed-out human beings on the fly when vampires go hunting. The first page of the PDF will name and thank all of this campaign's backers. Contributors at higher levels will have write-ups as NPCs in the resource itself; we'll send a form to each backer to generate stats, description, etc. High-level contributors can also provide a photo or illustration to attach to their entries. The total number of NPCs (and therefore pages) in the resource will depend upon the number of backers who respond, but the PDF will include at least 20 NPCs. Donors will be a free (or pay-what-you-want) PDF released under the same Creative Commons Sharealike License as Feed itself.
If we meet our stretch goal to expand Donors to a full supplement, it will include more NPCs, tables for generating random human victims in a variety of times and cultures, and modular rules for hunting particular kinds of prey. As a resource, Donors will be essentially an NPC collection with a page of acknowledgements at the beginning. As a supplement, Donors will be a complete guide to running the hunt, and to creating diverse, interesting human victims for various campaign styles.
Supplements and Mini-Supplements
$500 backers can work with me to create an 8-10 page mini-supplement for Feed. If we meet our highest stretch goal, I'll also produce a full 40-60 page supplement based on backer input. In either case, the contents of the supplement will depend on the subject matter, but will most likely include a new Strain, new Vampiric Traits, setting and storytelling material, and style- or Strain-specific rules. I'll release all supplements as free (or PWYW) PDFs with quality art and layout, and I'll license all supplements under the same CC ShareAlike License as Feed (this is a condition of the $500 reward level).
If there’s enough interest in Feed and enough funding to keep the bills paid, I’ve got some further goals beyond publishing the core book. If we meet these goals, I'll release the PDF products listed below for free, under the same CC ShareAlike license as Feed itself.
$2,460 (+$660): Donors upgraded to full PDF supplement
At $2,460, I can upgrade Donors from a simple PDF resource into a full supplement. In addition to providing fleshed-out human victims for your horror gaming needs (and launching my backers into RPG immortality), the supplement will also include extended rules for hunting, as well as random tables for generating diverse victims in a variety of times and cultures, all with professional art and layout. With the extra $600 for art, layout and research, I can produce an invaluable supplement for Feed or any horror game.
$3,180 (+$1,380): Rise of the Stuffies!
At $3,180, I’ll be able to pay my tireless stuffie-stuffer, Katrina Ehrnman, for all of her hard work on this campaign. She’s also agreed to produce up to 10 more amigurumi, beyond the quantity limits listed on the sidebar, if we can reach this goal. For my part, I’ll produce a PDF resource for the Safe Sucking series, complete with a Strain write-up, character sheets, Story Profiles, and color photos of our stuffed vampires in action. With this supplement, you, too, will be able to guide hapless young undead through the perils of budding vampirehood!
$5,500 (+$2,320): The Inevitable Supplement!
At $5,500, I’ll produce a full, 40-60 page supplement for Feed, with input from backers. Barring an outcry for something else, the supplement will most likely be a Strain supplement featuring a Strain Template, vampire power, setting material and GM advice for a new Strain (or one mentioned in the Feed rules, if backers prefer). With your help, I can give this supplement not only a professional layout, but also the art budget that Feed lacked. Much more than just a bare-bones resource or web add-on, this will be a complete supplement for a fully-realized Feed campaign, with production values to match.
Risks and challenges
I've gone to some effort and expense to make this project as risk-free as possible for backers. The PDF version of Feed is ready to release as I write, while the print version is in the final proof stage and will be ready for sale before this campaign is over. What you're really backing with this campaign is my ability to give Feed away rather than sell it. There's not much that can go wrong.
This campaign's physical rewards, which we'll have to order and/or hand-make and then ship, carry some inherent risk of delay. Here's a summary:
I'll be ordering dice, including the custom Feed dice, from Chessex. It's always possible that customization will take longer than expected. The January shipping date I've specified on the sidebar is very conservative. If it's clear early on that the project will fund, I'll order early to expedite shipping.
We expect to have all of the amigurumi ready for shipping on the day that the project ends. Because they're made to order, though, delays due to illness or
work emergencies could interfere. Once again, the estimated delivery date of January 2014 gives us a lot of leeway.
These items are handmade, but they come together much more quickly than amigurumi. All of the coffins should be ready to ship well before the custom dice that we'll be packing inside. If we run short of materials during the campaign, I'll post an update warning future backers of possible delays.
Print Copies of Feed
On the day that the project ends, I'll order copies of the book to fulfill backer orders. As I write, the print version is on target to be finalized before the campaign ends.
The PDF Supplements
The more PDFs I fund through rewards and Stretch Goals, the longer it'll take to get them all done. I'll release Donors sometime between December and February, depending on whether the first Stretch Goal upgrades it to a full supplement. After that, each supplement should take an additional month or two, roughly.
PDF copies of Feed
The Feed PDF is ready for release. If there's still a planet and still an Internet, the Feed PDF will be available for free as soon as this project is funded. I want to emphasize that if you fund Feed, there's zero risk of delay or non-delivery.
