Introducing Tinkathing

Tinkathing is a modular construction system. It inspires young inventors to build toy robots and design new constructions. Children can playfully learn basics in programming, electronics and mechanics. Tinkering with Tinkathing is fun, while enhancing creativity and innovative thinking.

Features

Tinkathing is educational  

Tinkering with Tinkathing teaches important skills for the future. Our construction system has more to offer than just to enhance fine-motor skills or spatial and creative abilities. With Tinkathing, children can learn basics in mechanics, as they design and assemble gearboxes and other moving parts. Children can learn basics in electronics by wiring the electronic components. And children can gain insights into the world of computer science and learn about coding, by using Arduino to control their models.  

Tinkathing is highly compatible  

Tinkathing combines conventional features of construction systems with modern technology. Tinkathing is compatible with a range of contemporary RC components like micro servos, motors, ESCs, RC car wheels or transmitters to control the models. Furthermore, Tinkathing is compatible with micro controllers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi, that can be used to build obstacle avoidance or line following robots. The broad compatibility with standard components leaves room for adding and adapting the construction kits, to facilitate individual needs for your child’s future creations.  

Tinkathing is flexible  

Tinkathing offers a high level of flexibility. All parts and modules can be combined in various ways, offering endless opportunities to build own creations. Mechanical and electronical parts can be arranged and attached easily. The gears were designed in a way to offer a maximum of interchangeability to achieve different gear ratios. The length of the caterpillar track is fully adjustable. The flexible use of all parts provides the chance for creative and innovative thinking.    

Tinkathing is easy to use and self- explanatory 

Colorful instruction manuals guide children on their learning journey. The instruction manuals consist of two key components: First, step by step instructions for the mechanical assembly of the models. Second, explanatory lessons to teach children basics in mechanics (e.g. how to reach different gear ratios), electronics (e.g. how to build a circuit) and programming (e.g. how to make the robot move in a specific pattern). All instructions are clear and easy to follow, enabling children to build models independently and without parental support.  

Tinkathing is fun  

Tinkathing is fun. Creating a model and programming it or controlling it remotely makes children's hearts beat faster. Our experience is that children will play hour after hour with the construction system. Playing with new constructions, brooding over new designs or having two robots fight each other will make time fly.

Why we think Tinkathing is important

The skills that can be learned with Tinkathing are important for your child’s future. According to a study of the World Economic Forum, creativity will rise to become a top 3 skill needed in the future work place.

 Tinkathing supports the development of creativity and imparts fundamental knowledge and skills in the areas of mechanics, electronics and programming.  

Skills in computer science are essential for the future to thrive in our modern world and digital economy. The inability to code is sometimes considered as the new form of illiteracy. As Stephen Hawkins, the Einstein of our time, says: “Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you just want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.” Arianna Huffington, the founder of The Huffington Post, said: “Learning to code is useful no matter what your career ambitions are.” Or, to put it simple: “Everybody’s got to learn how to code” (Barack Obama).  

STEM programs all over the world are trying to bring more science, technology, engineering and mathematics into schools. Tinkathing can bring it right into every children's room.

Where we are so far & where we want to go

Prototyping  

Over the last year, we have created different models for our system and tested several prototypes.  

After initial 3D printed prototypes, we used leading-edge technology to laser cut our metal components and we have molded our first plastic parts for the gear box.

We have presented our robots to the market at fairs and tested them with several children, parents and teachers in homes and schools and listened to their feedback.  

Now we are ready for production and excited about producing and sharing our first kits. 

Future development of the Tinkathing system  

  • Development of our own user interface to make coding an easy and enjoyable learning experience for everyone, through a drag & drop code snippets system
  • Increased functionality through additional mechanical and electronical components, such as sensors, speakers, camera module, additional gears and much more
  • Implementation of our designs for a quick snap part to supplement the nuts and bolts and make assembly of the hardware faster
  • Development of online and app tutorials to supplement the instruction manuals and provide easy access to even more ideas for models and inspriring creations

Risks and challenges

We are passionate about Tinkathing and worked continuously on our system for the last year. We will continue working on it full heartedly to ensure that our rewards can be shipped as promised. Although there is always a chance for unexpected delays, we are confident that we are able to mitigate and overcome the following risks and challenges:

Functionality
Our parts are custom made and specifically designed to ensure a high flexibility and modularity of our system. We have put a lot of thought into each of our pieces and used external specialists to ensure seamless functionality. With regard to technical questions we are supported by an electrical engineer and programmer with more than 30 years of experience. We have produced prototypes of our parts to test the functionality of our models. Our system was presented at different fairs, in homes and schools.

Quality
To ensure the durability and stability of our system, we have decided to produce most of our parts in aluminum, not plastics. We have tested several alloys to find the perfect mix between resiliency and hardness. For our plastic molded parts, we use quality plastics, specifically developed for toys. All our models have gone through long-term tests to discover quality flaws in our parts. We are in close contact with established companies that stand for quality and experience in their field. Parts that we have to buy externally were carefully selected to ensure that they meet our quality standards.

Delivery
The time frame is calculated generously. Our designs are well elaborated and we expect no revisions for our parts. After our first round of production we have calculated extra time to test our parts, discover any mismatches and adjust the production tools if necessary. We have already received parts from the factories and vendors we have chosen and trust them to deliver in time.

Finances
Since we are working with manufacturers in USA and China among others, there might occur currency changes that will affect our project. We have added a risk mitigation to our calculations to prevent scenarios like that or in case there are problems with our production tools for stamping and injection molding.

Communication
We will do our best to keep you posted along the way and send out regular updates. Comments are welcome, feedback is appreciated and we are happy to answer your questions.
