Large scale underwater photographs of erosion and industrial sites in the Mississippi River Delta south of New Orleans.

About this project

Land in Water is underwater photographs of erosion sites in the Mississippi River Delta.

Image 1.

The river delta is an environmental crucible that crystalizes much of the environmental challenges that face the United States.  The agricultural runoff (fertilizer, pesticides, and other byproducts of farming) of the Ohio, Missouri, and Mississippi river drainage system pours out from the delta creating a massive dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Flood control and navigation enhancements channel all the silt that would be building up the river delta off the continental shelf.  Levees channel spring floods until they nearly force the river to jump its course, stranding the river port cities of New Orleans, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Dubuque, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Tulsa among many others. Canals dug for the oil and gas industry as supply lines and navigation aids are letting in saltwater killing the trees that hold the soil of the delta in place.  75% has disappeared in the last 50 years.  The environmental consequence of our industrialization all seem to focus on New Orleans and it surroundings.

Land in Water focuses on the erosion in the navigation and pipeline canals of the current and historical deltas.  Using an underwater case and my 5D mark II, I am going to visit locations where erosion is occurring, where the land is slipping into the water, drifting out past the dead zone and slipping off the continental shelf.  Accessing the 330 sites I have identified using my 16 foot inflatable boat, I am going to submerge my camera (in an Ikelite housing) at each location and make as many images as it takes to get a great shot.

The images are a direct record of the erosional processes (along with everything else that water contains).  Each bears witness to the land in the water, to a space that is being erased by the lines we draw in the landscape. It is witness to unintentional devastation occurring on a vast scale.

I plan to exhibit the work publicly as 36” x 36” prints mounted and framed in carbon black custom built hardwood frames.  The work will form a continuous band of color fields, a grouping of waters just on the other side of the wall.  The goal is to inundate the viewer with what is happening in the region.

In order to support this project, I am offering three sizes of limited edition prints for pre-sale as well as a limited edition book. I am also offering limited editions of the images you see on this page.

I, my wife, and our three cats (Jeb, Jubal, and Binky) will be going to New Orleans for two one-month trips.  A cottage in the lakeside area will serve as our home base for traveling  in our van out to regions from the Mississippi border to the Atchafalaya basin, where we will take our Kaboat out to the erosion sites (the cats will be left at the cottage). Your support will help subsidize the cost of travel and living expenses for the two months of shooting in the river delta with any extra going to the cost of materials for making the exhibition.

Land in Water continues my environmental photography work examining private land and overgrazing in the American West and man made clouds in the form of contrails.  This work as well as my video, other photographic, and code based works can be found at pcm.pcmxa.com
