My name is François Pointeau. My new collection of poems, SONGS OF THE ROLLIN' CHATEAU, needs your help. My friend Brian Wootan is a painter. He created a poster and designed the cover. He also created five illustrations for the collection. This is our project.
Brian and myself need YOUR HELP to make the book and the poster a reality. We cannot do it without you.
We're creating something unique. We need to raise money before we go to press, and we're asking you to pledge in exchange for copies of the book and the poster. We'll even throw in a t-shirt or two depending on your pledge. We're working with a printer in Austin, Texas, to put out a top quality book and poster. (There will be no e-book or P.O.D. available.)
The first 150 copies of the book will be numbered and signed by both the poet & the artist. The first 25 copies of the poster will also be numbered and signed by both the poet & the artist. This is a first come, first served situation. The next 50 copies of the book will be signed by the poet, and the second 25 copies of the poster will be signed by the artist.
We will print as many books and posters as you pledge for, with a few extras for Brian and myself. That's it. If you're a bookstore or a collector, this Kickstarter is how you get a hold of your copies. We have several different pledges with different bundles, covering all your needs. Once this Kickstarter project is done, we're going to press, mailing you your books and posters, and that's it. The only way this collection is getting a second edition is if a mass-market publisher picks it up.
I spent six months living in an RV, thus the title: SONGS OF THE ROLLIN' CHATEAU. When I started my road-trip, I started writing a blog, as well as hundreds of private journal entries. Eventually, poetry started to emerge from the murk. Visions, and such. I finished the first draft while living in my RV on the side of the road in Austin, Texas.
Much of my writing was inspired by the landscapes of the American Southwest, the cold nights camping with my dog in the High Desert, on the shore of the Pacific Ocean, the lonely frozen mornings listening to coyotes, getting stuck in the middle of a blizzard driving over a mountain pass, working on a farm in northern California, and driving thousands of miles. Driving the roads of America at 35 miles per hour, helped me to experience America with more clarity.
What moved me the most, however were all the folks I met. Many of them friends & family, and plenty of other folks who became friends & family. You helped me along on my journey with food, shelter, drink, work, money, and even more importantly, with friendship, understanding, laughter, vision, and love.
The final version of SONGS OF THE ROLLIN' CHATEAU was edited by Tatiana Ryckman, and copy edited by Sue Reading. At least a dozen of you read my manuscript before I sent it to Tatiana, most of you professional writers, editors, and publishers. Nothing exists exclusively by itself for itself. Not even poetry. Especially not poetry. As far as I'm concerned, what inspires me is a blend of community, dreams, fears, and lived experiences.
I cannot write in a vacuum. Brian cannot paint in a vacuum. Nothing happens in a vacuum. This is why we need your help. This is why we're asking for your help. We want you to join us on our journey.
Please pledge to our project!
Risks and challenges
This has been a long road. There's no way that we'll ever sell enough books and posters to pay for all the hours Brian and myself have put into this project. On a purely financial level, this project makes no sense whatsoever. So why not just print it and be done with it? Instead of asking people for help to get the book and the poster printed?
We want to print what people want. There's no need to print 500 books if we're only going to sell 150 copies of the book. Same with the poster. We only want to print what people are going to buy, however we want the quality to be excellent. That means no p.o.d. and no e-books. That means actually hiring an actual printing press with actual people who care about producing quality books and posters. That means lots of money.
The challenges at this point, is bringing it all together, print some awesome books and posters, and ship them to you for a fair price within an acceptable window of time. That's difficult. To keep the prices down and the quality up, Brian and myself will have to pick up the books and posters at the printing press ourselves, and then do all the packing and shipping ourselves.
That's a lot of work, and since Brian and myself live in different cities, and we're both fully employed with full lives, that means scheduling, and making it all happen and somehow staying within our budget will be a huge challenge.
However in the end, it's all worth it. And we thank you for your help with this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
