About

Boxland is an imaginative new children’s series following the adventures of twins Reggie and Neena as they enter a world unlike one they’re ever known—a world of infinite possibilities. In Boxland, not only can the beautiful ideas and dreams of Reggie and Neena materialize literally before their eyes in Cardboard “manifestations”, but so too can their darkest fears and most troublesome worries. To navigate through Boxland, this daring duo must work together in a collaboration of imaginations to carefully build the reality they want to explore.

Innovatively combining the rich tradition of puppetry with the ever-expanding art of animation, Boxland shares a story easily accessible to children of the powers of imagination and invites them to partake in the whimsical adventures of Reggie and Neena by crafting their own realities with the exact same magical materials.

It is our hope that by creating a visual universe entirely out of cardboard, children all over the world will gain access to the same virtual reality and make their imaginings not only tangible, but shareable with other inventive minds.

Boxland is step in a new direction for children's programming. Instead of a show that promotes a line of toys kids can buy in a store, Boxland promotes using free materials kids have access to anyways. The show teaches them to recycle and re-use instead of buying plastic goods.

We are on Kickstarter to raise the funds to create our stars: Reggie and Neena. While the world they inhabit will be easily obtained and created, Reggie and Neena themselves will be highly sophisticated puppets that will take months to bring to life. These puppets will be a combination of Bunraku and mouth-and-rod puppetry styles. They will have hands that are capable of grasping objects and their wardrobes will be intricately styled to look like modern kids' clothes.

Brian Stabile is a long-time master of puppetry and life-long master of imagination. In addition to these roles, Brian is also a filmmaker, who having worked in a traveling circus and at puppet theatres on the east and west coasts, brings to this project not only an appreciation for the art of story-telling, but an expertise in visual artistry.

Risks and challenges

Building puppets is a trial-and-error process. The mechanisms that go into helping a puppet move realistically never seem to work the way you think they will. Because of this, there is a very real chance that Reggie and Neena's mechanics will have to be scrapped two or three times before they are perfected. This is normal.
As contributors follow us on our production journal, what they will see is more of an evolution than a simple creation. The hands probably won't work right the first time, the clothes won't fit, the hair won't lay down straight, the skin will be the wrong color, a million things will go wrong. As our contributors see these things pop up, they might naturally feel frustrated. Don't worry. I have built dozens of puppets and I know that if you keep working, everything will look just the way you imagined it in the end.
