You are an adventurer born in the fourth age - an age marked by uncertainty and strife. The Hellghoul War left the northern lands in tremendous devastation and chaos. Ardabil is lost, the Wastelands roamed by ravaging warbands. Darkness stirs in Blackwither, and the Sinister renew their blood spells with ever-increasing fervor from within the lush thickets of the Deepwoods. And all the while, the Dark One of Nigorat remains undefeated. Brooding. Scheming.
Welcome to Vindeon.
It all began as a high-school project. Or rather, a newly found love and excitement for fantasy and tabletop role-playing games back in the youthful days of 2004. The seeds of Vindeon were planted there and then - a world history and a few rules of some astonishing 65 pages in Swedish, accompanied by the grand adventure 'Frostavidda' (Plains of Frost), which promptly saw some use over quite a few rp-sessions.
Time flew by, and here we are today. Following the successful kickstarter release of the viking fantasy tale 'Nifelhelsfärd' (Journey to Misty Hel) in 2016, it was time to return to that most beloved of projects; the world of Vindeon, to finish what was started so long ago. Two years of hard work has resulted in where we are now, eager to release the complete Vindeon First Edition core rulebook!
The completed book (excluding addons from fulfilled stretch goals) will contain 275 pages in the standard 21 cm x 29,7 cm (A4) format. Its illustrations and text (apart from the first picture) will be printed in black and white colors, and its cover will be printed in full color. The PDF versions of both Vindeon and the accompanying adventure The Maid of Flowerdale will have sepia-colored illustrations and inlet borders, and their book covers will be in full color.
The world is not healed. The elves, dwarves and humans have just begun to recover and rebuild after the devastation wrought by conflict and change. But not all. Some realms fell in the chaos, and now lies in ruins or serve even darker purposes. In this time of instability, you are trying to find your place in the world. There is no telling what fate Vindeon has in store for you and your companions. No telling how small or grand adventure looming just beyond the horizon or behind the next bend of the forest trail.
Player - Character
You play a character in a darkening, torn world, who embarks on an adventure or campaign, forging your destiny along the way or die trying. The world is unforgiving an often brutal, but it is not yet bereft of love and joy. There will always be hope.
Embark on these undertakings as one of the three playable races: humans, dwarves and elves, and choose from nine unique human, dwarven or elven cultures and their culture-specific professions, to customize your character to fit your preferred play-style and acting. Or go rogue and create a profession of your own!
Rules - Core Concept
The Vindeon rules are designed to create fast action gameplay with uncomplicated but intelligent combat rules, rewarding tactics and providing clear benefits and drawbacks for each different combat role. You use a d20 to determine action success (critical hit and miss chance is set to 10% because it's fun with high risks and high rewards!), and you use action points to perform actions. Outside of combat, action points are obsolete. Our goal with this is to maximize immersion and acting whilst still maintaining the core element of dice throwing to keep the excitement and uncertainty of the 'roll'.
Rules - Quick Overview
The Vindeon core rulebook is lore-rich with a number of stories ranging widely in length embedded into different chapters, breathing life into the world, its denizens and its history. We have included lots of skills, professions, spells and items, and also a nice boost rule called 'abilities', which are (excluding a certain stretch goal) profession-bound. This means that as long as the players of a group chooses different professions (there are over sixty of them), each player will have an exclusive - and often significant - action to perform when the need arises.
The Maid of Flowerdale
The Maid of Flowerdale is the very first officially released adventure for Vindeon, set in the beautiful rural town of the same name and its surroundings, in the Alerian county Faerann Eadar - western Loingseach. A wedding between the baron's son and the youngest daughter of Flowerdale's town reeve is about to begin, but something terrible happens just before the celebrations commence. It is up to you now to delve deeper into the dark secrets buried beneath the innocent, idyllic appearance of Flowerdale, to uncover the truth of the matter, explore hidden places and meet a handful of Faerann Eadar's most interesting individuals, for better or for worse. Will you solve the mystery? Or will evil have its way? That story is for you to tell! We created this 64 pages long adventure because we want players to immediately be able to plunge into the world as characters in a story.
Should we surpass the initial goal, we will add more content to show our appreciation!
14,000 SEK - Foes Abound: What is an adventure without enemies to vanquish? If we reach this stretch goal, we will add five new enemies to each of the five NPC categories: Civilized, Trollkind, Undead, Evil/Corrupted and Beasts.
16,000 SEK - Unbound Abilities: We will add an alternative to the profession-specific abilities in game. Or rather, twenty! If we reach this stretch goal, we will enable you to choose from one of these new Unbound Abilities, to replace your old one or when creating a profession of your own!
18,000 SEK - Bad Traits: Oh noes! We will now deviously add 100 traits of not-so-much glory. Roll a d100 to see what yours is and laugh together with your friends as new weird and hilarious situations unfold!
20,000 SEK - Flowerdale's Critical Roles: Who can play the Maid of Flowerdale adventure without wanting to know how the main characters look? We will add the portraits of Miranda, Liara, Brodan, Tearlach and Eileen to the Flowerdale adventure book.
20,666 SEK - Evil Developers: If we reach this most unhallowed of numbers, we will add ourselves depicted as evil characters in the core rulebook! Tom Oden Ahlqvist becomes a palegoblin spellduke, Jonas Gustavsson a goblin hexmaster, and Nomi Bontegard a forest troll!
Lead and Writer of the Vindeon project is Tom Oden Ahlqvist, having had the honor to work with the two skilled illustrators Jonas Gustavsson and Nomi Bontegard.
Jonas Gustavsson is an active part-time painter and sketch artist, working mainly with pencil, ink and acrylic methods. He recently had an open independent exhibition of ink paintings at the Häktet restaurant in Stockholm.
Nomi Bontegard studies Game Graphics at Futuregames in Stockholm and makes concepts, key art, 3D models and animations. Before expanding her repertoire to digital painting two years ago, she worked on fantasy themed sketches and acrylic art.
Risks and challenges
After learning from experience following the release of Nifelhelsfärd via kickstarter, it was realized that shipping completed products was a little more problematic than it would first seem. Padded letters cost more than we thought, and additionally, there were some shipping addresses which the backers entered that was not approved by the post office. We had to get in contact with them somehow to be able to give them the products. Now we are ready with a plan for these issues, and we believe they will be resolved more efficiently this time.
We will be working with the same publishing company as before, and they delivered excellently as per our request last time - the books arrived in time and undamaged. We will have them printed and ready to be shipped well before estimated time of delivery, to compensate for eventual shipping delays by third party.
The texts are already finished as well as most of the pictures, and we have set a very comfortable estimated time for delivery for when the completed products will be shipped, just to make sure our backers will receive them when promised.
The hardcopies will only be shipped within Sweden (simply because this is the postal system we understand). Do not despair, outlanders, our next step is to enable for international distribution, but at the moment, we feel we are not on that level just yet!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
