CITIES OF MAGICK SHIPS ANYWHERE IN THE USA, THE EU, & AUSTRALIA
“His old life lay behind in the mists, dark adventure lay in front.”
-- J.R.R Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
What Folks Are Saying...
"Just read this! A smart, inventive take that starts with the end of the world and throws you head first into what comes NEXT! This is humanity after a paradigm shift, gripping in what we leave behind, and even more so in what we can't give up. Check it out! Help bring it home!"
"Just had a chance to read CITIES OF MAGICK thanks to @Jakob_Free and it's a cracker. A brand new, post tech world of cowboys, gangs and sorcery with plenty to say about our own reality! Funding right now on Kickstarter, don't miss it!"
"I just read a preview of this little beaut', and boy is it EVER worth your time. It's got something for everyone - magic, gunfights, and a couple well-delivered digs at New York - sorry, OLD York City. Check it out, you're gonna want in!"
"Late to this Kickstarter, but CITIES OF MAGICK by @Jakob_Free and @Will_Tempest is the jaw-dropping grungy fantasy book your body needs. I've read it and it's well worth your time and your shillings."
In the mid-21st century, Earth is caught in a massive energy nexus of unknown origin, wiping out half of humanity and all of its modern technology. Governments break down into small city-based factions all over the world. A hundred years later, a group of explorers and scientists discover how to harness the energy of the nexus and create “magick,” a new type of power source for a new age.
The world of Cities of Magick exists inside the ruins of our present day. The husks of once great cities are now filled with jury-rigged, Rube Goldberg-esque magick contraptions providing power, water, food, entertainment. And the totems of the old world--your iPhones, your Nikes, your sports cars--are now devoid of power.
Our hero, Lev, a self-proclaimed “old school cowboy,” believes that magick’s widespread use is the result of a society grown decadent. He yearns for the bygone days and wants to return to the old ways of electricity and digital technology. He’s a reverse-luddite, if you will.
Cities of Magick is a future-fantasy story about the intersection of geography and magick. How do our needs and wants and desires manifest themselves in the architecture and infrastructure of a city fueled by willpower and imagination? And how do people like Lev fit into a world like that?
This is Sons of Anarchy meets Lord of the Rings with a big helping of spaghetti (western). Prepare for high-octane action sequences, Arthurian questing, and political power struggle all rolled into one.
This is the Age of Magick. The Age of City-States and Magick Gangs and the Post-Post Apocalypse. Our hero, a cowboy named Lev, strolls into Old York City looking for something no one's ever seen before. He's picked a bad time. The forces of Hyper-Priestess Isimar Rothschild, the Queen of the Chicago Conglomerate, have attacked Old York. The only person who stands in Isimar's way is Gregor Steiner, leader of the Red Double Xs, the magick gang that protects the city from foreign invaders.
Lev didn't come looking for a fight, but that doesn't mean he isn't prepared for one. Caught in the midst of a decade-old war between two powerful gangs, Lev has to figure out where his loyalties lie, if he has any to speak of. And he has to do it all quick-like...
Cities of Magick #1 is a 22 page full color comic book. It is the first part of a five part story.
Cast of Characters
Lev, our protagonist. Lev is a mysterious drifter who wanders into Old York City on a quest...of sorts. A self proclaimed “old-school cowboy,” Lev yearns for the days of cellphones, laptops, and electric cars. He's carrying a secret that may hold the key to uniting the warring clans of magick in America...
Hyper-Priestess Isimar Rothschild, the dread queen of the Chicago Conglomerate, a group of city-states with Chi-City as its capital. A powerful magick user who seeks to claim Old York as her own. Her terrible power comes from a famed and enigmatic object known as The Vargus.
Gregor Steiner, the leader of the Red Double Xs, an Isimar-opposition force based in downtown Old York. While Steiner is a man of principle, he won’t let those principles get in the way of his ultimate goal: seeing Old York City restored to its former glory.
Rottenheim, Isimar's right hand. A cruel and dangerous magick user who wishes nothing more than to crush his enemies underfoot and please his mistress by doing her bidding.

Why we've come to Kickstarter...
Issue #1 of Cities of Magick is partially complete. We're looking to change that. The goal of this Kickstarter campaign is to raise enough funding to complete the ink, color, and design work on the book. Following that, we're going to have it printed and shipped to backers. Any additional funding taken in after we meet our goal will go toward various stretch goals (see below).
$500 over Funding Goal -- The Old York City Tourism Board Presents: The Visitor's Guide to Magick, a 10-page digital booklet detailing the various magickal systems, devices, and incantations in the world of Cities of Magick. Available to all backers who pledge at the $5 tier or above.
$1100 over Funding Goal -- Printed copies of The Visitor's Guide to Magick! Available to all backers who pledge at the $11 tier or above.
$$$ over Funding Goal -- TBA
Risks and challenges
The Cities of Magick campaign marks the fourth Kickstarter project I've orchestrated. As I've slowly broadened the scope of each campaign--going from digital only rewards to printed comics--I've learned a lot about the ins and outs of putting these projects together. Having recently begun final delivery of the rewards from my previous campaign (Suburban & Chickenhawk: The Mega-Mall Disaster #1), I'm confident that I can deliver a similarly scoped project again, only better and more efficiently.
To allay your potential concerns further, the entire first issue of Cities of Magick has already been pencilled and lettered. The first 6 pages, as you can see above, have been inked and colored. This means that we already have a head start on completing this book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
