In February of 2014, a group of friends climbed up on the stage at Southport Music Hall in New Orleans. It was their first time playing a real gig. This wasn’t a house party, It was a 500-person venue at full capacity. Bound together by a passion for music, the group played their first show to a packed crowd of friends, friends of friends, and total strangers. They played with their whole hearts and entire beings. It was fun, it was wild, it was the most unforgettable night of their lives, and it was the beginning of something special.
Hi! We're Miss Mojo, and that story you just read? That's about us. We've come a long way from that evening, having gained and lost some wonderful folks along the way, but almost four years later, five of us have never looked back. We've played shows in historic venues in one of the most iconic music cities in the world including, but not limited to, Tipitina's, The Maple Leaf, and The Blue Nile. We've toured regionally and along the East Coast with our music, selling out shows in cities like Boston and New York.
On top of staying busy with shows and touring, we recorded and released our first EP -- Up & Personal -- and made our first music video. Through these countless hours we've spent together, we've grown the friendships that make our band special, allowing us to create unique, soulful and collaborative original music that we can't wait to share with all of you.
Our first record was financed strictly off of gig money, but we believe this project is deserving of a larger financial commitment. Like any Miss Mojo experience, these songs have a little bit of each of us: Jenna, Piper, Mack, Leo, Cody, Rob. It's music that we love, music we are proud of, and music we want to present at the absolute highest quality so that it can come through your speakers sounding deep and divine.
The music we are talking about will make up our first full length album, featuring a total of 10 tracks. The name of the album is Love In Time, and it was written with the intention of taking the listener on a journey. It follows the movement of an individual through stages of a relationship, capturing the emotions and energies felt while navigating through the complexities of loving others and oneself. These songs resonate with us deeply, and it is our most sincere hope that our listeners will also be able to relate to and experience that depth.
So let's get to the nitty gritty. We want you to understand what we've embarked on, and where exactly your money is going. This project has four phases. Here is the breakdown:
1) RECORDING PROCESS- $5,000 (renting studio time, paying additional musicians, paying sound engineer/producer)
2) PRODUCTION/MIXING- $4,000 (pre/in-studio production)
3) MASTERING- $500 (Mastering the tracks to best fit your speakers, whatever they may be!)
4) PROMOTION/DUPLICATION- $2,500 (Album art, new merchandise, promotion)
Recording an album isn't cheap! We've been working hard to finance as much of this as possible, but in order to give this project the attention and love it deserves, we need some help.
We cannot express how much it means to be able to create this music (the music we love) with this group of people (the people we love) for audiences like YOU (who we love most of all!)
The thought that you might be willing to help us take it to the next level is truly humbling. Any donation you can make is appreciated beyond words and will help us complete this dream of a project.
Risks and challenges
Being in the music biz definitely leads to some risks and challenges, and our band is no exception. Since our start, we have had our fair share of speed bumps due to our size. Coordinating with 6-8 people, all with different schedules has been quite the task. While in our first couple years it lead to some conflicts, we now have realigned and recommitted as a group, and already this challenge has dissipated. We all agree that this band is one of the, if not the most, important commitment we are a part of, and we are willing to put other things on hold while this comes first. When it comes to this project in particular, we are going to need to give a LOT of time and energy and we are energized, excited, and ready.
In addition to overcoming challenges related to our busy lives, money, or the lack thereof, is always a challenge. With a project like this, the more money, the better quality, the more promotion, etc. This Kickstarter is one way we've decided to overcome this challenge, in addition to playing as many shows, both in and out of New Orleans, to raise as much cash as we can on our own.
No matter the challenges that may arise while we work to create this album, one thing is for certain- we are in this together, we have a shared passion and vision, and we couldn't be more excited about and confident in what will come out at the end.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
